European Cup providing a 5 event Series and offering US$75,000 in prize-money

Europe is the place to be this summer as the European Cup will be a highlight of the Summer Racing scene for the World of Stand Up Paddling, as the waterman league is combining 5 SUP-Races under one ranking system. The winners will stay at Turtle Bay for the Stand Up World Series Final.

5 spectacular events, a mixture of World Series and World Challenger Series events make up the Waterman League’s European Cup, encompassing both northern and southen Europe for a line up of events like no other.

Here are the Stops:

Bilbao, Spain: 6th – 8th June (Prime World Challenger Series)
Oleron Island, France: 13th – 15th June (World Challenger Series)
Sieravuori, Finland: 3rd – 5th July (World Challenger Series)
Fehmarn Germany: 18th – 20th July (World Series: $25,000)
Roma, Italy: 26th – 28th July (World Challenger Series)
Aside from each event’s significance on both the World and Challenger Series, athletes‘ results across this European Series will count towards the Overall European Cup Title.

Athletes‘ best 3 results from the 5 events will provide their overall ranking on the European Cup, as athletes will be putting it all on the line to lift the European Cup over there head in Rome, Italy in July.

Bilbao to continue to build its iconic event in the Basque Country of Spain

The Bilbao World Paddle Challenge put the Basque Country on the map for SUP last summer with a breakout event that brought the world’s best to the center of this magnificent City for a dramatic battle for the ages.

With hundreds of participants taking part in the 2013 edition, it was Connor Baxter (Starboard) and Annabel Anderson (Starboard) who took the honors in this historic race as the foundations were laid for a great future for the sport and the World Series in Spain.

In 2014, from the 6th – 8th June the Bilbao World Paddle Challenge will once again put the Basque Country on the map with this prestigious Opener for the European Cup and one of the biggest events on the Global Calendar. Oleron Island to welcome back the World of SUP to its dramatic & beautiful coastline

The Oleron Island Paddle Challenge is back in 2014 as a Challenger Series event and one of the prestigious stops counting towards the 2014 European Cup.

Over the past few years, it has welcomed the world’s best to its shores to celebrate the beginning of summer in a unique SUP destination at the heart of Europe.

In 2013, it was a familiar story with Connor Baxter (Starboard) and Annabel Anderson (Starboard) taking the victories. While in 2014, the island will once again opens its arms to Stand Up Paddlers of all levels for this year’s edition of the Oleron Island Paddle Challenge.

Finland steps up to join the global stage for Stand Up Paddling in Sieravuori

As an all new stop on both the Challenger Series and as a part of the newly formed European Cup, the Sieravuori SUP Masters is an exciting addition to the high profile line up of events this summer, as Finland showcases the allure of the destination and opens its arms to both the World’s best, but also paddlers of all levels.

Lomakeskus Sieravuori is a stunning part of Finland that has long been a popular holiday destination, but that also provides the perfect backdrop for a paddling adventure and a unique location for this exciting new stop on the World Challenger Series and European Cup.

Entries will open for this $10,000 stop on the Series this week.

Fehmarn, Germany to serve as Stop number 3 of the 2014 Stand Up World Series

Fehmarn Germany will be the destination for stop number 3 on the 2014 Stand Up World Series, and stop number 4 of the European Cup. This high profile stop on the World Series has moved home in 2014 to the beautiful new venue of Fehmarn.

Apart from the appeal of the location at Fehmarn, the reason for the move is to allow our German partners, in conjunction with us here at the Waterman League, to fulfill our vision of establishing this event as one of the largest SUP Festivals in the World for years to come.

The location will provide unique access to the sport for all, combining high profile World Championship competition with mass demo opportunities, unique hospitality elements and social activities to make it a weekend to remember.

With $25,000 prize-money for the pros and a full Open division providing something for everyone, the Fehmarn World Cup of SUP will be an event to remember in 2014, as entries open this week for the event that will run from the 18th – 20th July.

Italia Surf EXPO to host Challenger Series & European Cup Final

Now in its 16th year and well established as Italy’s biggest Ocean Sports event and gathering, the Italia Surf Expo will now host a prestigious World Challenger Series event with $10,000 in prize-money, but also the climactic Finals to the 2014 European Cup.

Taking place at the beautiful Santa Severa beach in Rome below the Medieval Castle of Odescalchi from the 25th – 27th July, the Italia Surf Expo brings the Ocean Sports community together for a weekend of unforgettable action both on and off the water, as the World Challenger Series, European Cup and Waterman League arrives in Italy.

EURO SUP CUP – 5 Rennen – Preisgeld $75k – Vier Tage nach Turtle Bay zum Finale der Stand Up World Series

Der europäische SUP Sommer ist gerade nochmals eine Ecke toller geworden. Die Waterman League hat den „European Cup“ ausgerufen. In einem separaten Ranking werden 5 Rennen zusammen genommen und zum Schluss werden der Sieger und Turtle Bay eingeladen zum Finale der Stand Up World Series.

Dies sind die 5 Rennen die in die Wertung kommen:

Bilbao SUP World Challenge

Die Bilbao SUP World Challenge war ein riesen Erfolg letztes Jahr und rückte das Baskenland ins Zentrum der SUP-Welt für eine Woche. Connor Baxter und Annabel Anderson gewannen den Event letztes Jahr.

Auch dieses Jahr werden wieder viele Internationale SUP-Athleten ins Baskenland pilgern. Dieses Jahr ist ein Preisgeld in der Höhe von $20’000.- ausgeschrieben, was bestimmt einige Elite-Paddler anlocken wird.

Ile d’Oleron Island Paddle Challenge

Bestimmt eines der SUP Rennen in Europa mit der schönsten Kulisse. Wir erinnern uns hier noch sehr gut als Annabel Anderson mehr als die Hälfte der Männer in Grund und Boden paddelte. Dieser Event wird bestimmt auch dieses Jahr sehr interessant werden.

Ganz neu: Stand Up Paddling in Sieravouri, Inland mit den Sieravouri SUP Masters

Aus Finnland hat man per Dato noch gar nie was gehört, diese Nation schien vom SUP Trend komplett ausgelassen, nicht so dieses Jahr, die watermanleague bring SUP nach Sieravouri einem Ferienort in Finnland. Auch dort gibt es gutes Geld zu verdienen: $10’000.- sind ausgeschrieben. Das wird bestimmt ein Besuch wert, denn man darf annehmen, dass nicht alle die in Bilbao und Oleron paddeln werden auch nach Finnland fahren werden, gerade was die stärkere Konkurrenz angeht.

Stand Up World Cup: Alte Tradition neuer Austragungsort in Fehmarn, Deutschland

Dieser dritte Stopp im EURO SUP CUP wird bestimmt der größte werden. Nicht nur warten dort $25’000.- an Preisgeld sondern 3 Tage SUP Festival mit Party, Austellern und allem Drum und Dran. Fehmarn wird also mit Sicherheit der SUP-Event des Jahres in Deutschland, wenn nicht in Europa. Dabei gibt es nicht nur eine Pro-Klasse sondern das Rennen ist auch offen für Jedermann und Jederfrau.

Italia Surf EXPO der Final – World Challenger Series

Die Italia Surf EXPO findet dieses Jahr schon zum 16. Mal statt und ist der wohl größte Event in Italien zum Theme „Ocean-Sports“. An diesem World Challenger Rennen wird es nochmals ein gesamtes Preisgeld von $10’000.- zu hohlen geben.

Das SUP Rennen selber wird am Strand von Santa Severa stattfinden gleichzeitig zur grossen EXPO. Keine Frage, hier wird man sich mit Italiens SUP-Elite messen können.

Sieger gehen nach Turtle Bay

Der Sieger und die Siegerin des European SUP Cup werden dann im Oktober fuer 4 Tage nach Turtle Bay eingeladen zum grossen Finale der Stand Up World Series.

Wer sich also in Europe mit SUP einen Namen machen will, sollte mindestens 3 von 5 Tourstopps mitmachen und in die Top 10 Paddeln für die grosse Chance im Oktober auf Oahu mit dabei zu sein. Aber Achtung: Der Flug scheint nicht inbegriffen.

SUP Champions Tour – New concept in SUP Racing

Several Questions about the „SUP Champions Tour“

If you are up and on in SUP Racing you probably heard or read about the SUP Champions Tour. The first time the idea emerged was on SUPRacer, the #1 Plattform in SUP-Racing. The idea is plain out simple: Take some stand alone SUP Races and tie them up into a „Tour“ with an over all ranking system. Kind of similar to the FedEx Cup inside the PGA Tour, if you are familiar with golf.

If we were to adapt the concept from golf to SUP Racing it would probably look like this: The SUPAA facilitates a professional SUP-Tour, a (wealthy) sponsor then would take on a few key races and rank them in their own ranking system. The winner of such a race would receive price money from the actual race sponsor plus points and money from the co-sponsor.

The SUP Champion tour is kind of like this, except there is no unified association or sponsor behind the races, or at least not yet. They are all individual and completely different formats from one of the other. A similar concept is also pursued by the EUROSUPA, all the EUROSUPA does is putting out a ranking system for some hand picked races to raise the value of the individual race.

So here are the races, associated with the „Champions SUP-Tour“:

Race #1: Carolina Cup, April 26th (Elite Graveyard Race, 14′ division, ocean/flat)
Race #2: OluKai, May 10th (line honors, downwind)
Race #3: Lost Mills, June 21st (14′ division, flat)
Race #4: The Ultimate SUP Showdown, August 16th (12’6 division, surf)
Race #5: Gorge Paddle Challenge, August 23rd /24th (overall combined results, 14′, downwind/flatwater)
Race #6: Battle of the Paddle Elite Race, October 4th (12’6, surf)
Race #7: Battle of the paddle Elite Distance Race, October 5th (14′ division, ocean)

The article on SUPRacer mentions that this year this will be a loose ranking system and somewhat of a test-run. The article provides some great insight on how some Elite-Paddlers think about this and also reveals that this idea is a brain child of Danny Ching. Great Idea: No need to organize a new tour, just take whats out there and give back to the event organizers by labeling their events as part something bigger.

How ever right now there are 6 out of 7 events in the united states, and we agree that this will have to change to a more international field of races. 4 Races in the tour are 14′ Class, 2 Races are 12’6″ class and the Olukai is completely open. On this one we are not quite sure how this will make things more simple for athletes.

Some of the questions we like to raise here in on the whole new tour-thing:

– In order to call something a tour, don’t the races in the tour have to presented under a kind of unified label, with a platform where the media and fans can keep track of the contestants in the tour?

– Will this compete with the Stand Up World Series?

– What happens at the end of the tour? Will there be a separate ceremony at the Battle of the Paddle?

– Who sponsors the price money?

– How will the SUPAA be integrated in that, if so?

– Why is it called „Champions Tour“? Are all the participants already champions at one of the races? Do you have to be a champion? (Hence the „Hyundai Tournament of Champions“ on Maui every Janary, there only Champions are invited. Meaning you have had to win a PGA Tournament in the season prior to be invited.)

All in all this entire thing seems to be a bit premature for the PR it is receiving. One thing is for  sure, all the races mentioned above draw a large crowd of Elite-Paddlers and Amateur-Paddlers.

Definitely not rocket science but some how a bit confusing after all. The way it stands right now this seems to be a concept in its infancy with many details to be worked out in order to stand a chance as a real tour.

Einige Fragen zur neuen „SUP Champions Tour“

Wer sich im SUP-Racing Sport auskennt, hat es bestimmt schon auf SUPRacer gelesen: Danny Ching hatte die Idee existierende SUP-Rennen in eine Tour zu vereinen. Das Konzept ist denkbar einfach: Nichts neues erfinden, einfach das nehmen was schon existiert und Teil von etwas grösserem machen, dank Zusammenschluss. Das Konzept erinnert etwas an den FedEx Cup innerhalb der PGA Golf Tour. Das ganze umgesetzt auf SUP würde dann in etwa so aussehen:

Die SUPAA organisiert eine Tour, oder wie jetzt die Watermanleague. Innerhalb dieser Tour würde dann ein (reicher) Sponsor die besten Rennen herauspicken und sie Teil einer Sonderwertung machen, wofür es dann auch Punkte und Preisgeld gibt. So in etwa sieht das Konzept von Danny Ching aus ausser, dass die Rennen einander nicht angehören und auch nicht Teil eines Verbandes sind.

Folgenden Rennen wurden nun also ausgewählt für dieses Jahr, als Test so quasi:

Dabei fällt auf, dass 6 von 7 Rennen in den USA stattfinden, aber das ist den Leuten hinter der Idee auch klar und auf 2015 wolle man das erweitern, heißt es im Artikel von SUPRacer. Darum hat man es auch vermieden, das ganze mit irgendeinem Weltmeistertitel zu verknüpfen. Das Konzept gefällt sehr gut auf den ersten Blick und ist auch etwas, dass man sich in Deutschland überlegen könnte anstatt zig verschiedene Touren und Meisterschaften auszurufen.

Aber trotzdem, ganz wasserdicht scheint die Idee noch nicht ganz. Da kommen doch schon einige Fragen auf:

– Braucht es um eine Tour auszurufen nicht eine geschlossene Organisation dahinter, mit einer Plattform wo man sich informieren kann zum Stand der Dinge?

– Ist diese Tour eine Konkurrenz für die Stand Up World Series?

– Was passiert am Ende der „Tour“ am Battle of the Paddle? Gibt es eine separate Zeremonie?

– Sponsert jemand Preisgeld?

– In wie fern wird die SUPAA eingebunden, falls überhaupt?

– Warum wird diese „Tour“ Champions Tour genannt? Braucht man ein Champion zu sein um mit dabei zu sein?

Alles in allem scheinen hier zu viele Fragen offen um dieser Sache so viel PR zu geben. Man wird den Verdacht nicht mehr los, dass es eine Gruppe von Paddlern gibt die krampfhaft versuchen etwas eigenes zu machen und eine Gruppe von Paddlern die sich der Stand Up World Series und Stand Up World Tour anschließen.

Wer sich also sorgen macht, dass wir in Deutschland nicht organisiert genug sind, der muss nur in die Welt schauen und wird sehen, dass wir international auch nicht viel weiter sind.

Man wird sehen, was die Saison bringt und das Jahr danach.

Kai Lenny proves victorious in the World Tour Surfing at the Abu Dhabi All Stars

After 3 days of intense action at Wadi Adventure Park in the UAE, it all came down to one final heat: 3 lefts, 3 rights and 3 closeouts as 3x World Champion Kai Lenny (Naish) from Maui stepped it up a gear to secure his first win of the season here at the Abu Dhabi All Stars Grand Slam.

The final was one to remember, as the 2 on form surfers of the event, Sean Poynter (Starboard) from Florida and Kai Lenny (Naish) battled it out to the bitter end, going wave for wave in the completely unique format that the Abu Dhabi All Stars provides.

Despite considering himself weaker on his backhand, Kai rode 2 flawless lefts to start off the exchange, with scores in the excellent range, making it a chasing game for the on form Sean Poynter, as Sean attacked the rights and closeouts with everything he had to achieve the 9.27 he needed to take the win.

But it all came down to a last wave of Sean to get the score, as Kai waited for his last wave and turns of the event. In the end, Sean’s score was not enough, as Kai executed a perfect air reverse into 360 by way of a victory lap before getting carried out of the pool by his team mates. A great result for the 3x World Champion after a disappointing finish in Brazil, relighting his competitive fire as we move into the World Series component of the Abu Dhabi All Stars Grand Slam.

Izzy Gomez comes from behind to take victory at the Abu Dhabi All Stars

Coming off an impressive win at the last stop of the Stand Up World Tour in Brazil, Izzy Gomez (Starboard) started slower at the open of the 2014 Abu Dhabi All Stars, but soon found her stride and gained momentum through the rounds to take victory at stop #3 on the 2014 Stand Up World Tour. With an incredible winning record (2 out of 3 this year and 4 out of 7 since the beginning of 2013), Izzi is proving herself to be a dominant force in the sport of Stand Up Paddling and a true Champion.

Izzi Gomez‘ road to the Finals was exciting, as a slow start saw her build momentum through the rounds, to overpower the new talent on Tour and 3rd place finisher in Hawaii, Sophia Bartlow and then the on form Aline Adisaka (New Advance) from Brazil.

In the Final, she seemed up against the ropes with Iballa Moreno (Starboard) opening strong with a couple of high scoring lefts. However through the rights and closeouts, Izzi was able to post scores in the excellent range, taking her to victory in this prestigious Abu Dhabi All Stars.

An incredible performance by this young Champion, as she continues to strengthen her position on the World Championship Tour and as one of the very best Stand Up Paddlesurfers in the World.

Nicole Pacelli goes down in the Semi Finals, but not without a fight

Nicole Pacelli puts on an impressive performance at the ABu Dhabi All Stars Grand Slam, notching up the highest heat score total in Round #1, then blazing her way through the quarterfinals to the semis, where she was finally stopped by the on form Iballa Moreno (Starboard) from Spain.

Even though Nicole would have wanted a win here in Abu Dhabi, she has to be happy with 3rd place finish, to complement her 1st and 2nd in Hawaii and Brazil respectively. She is now tied for 1st overall in the rankings with Izzi Gomez (Starboard), so it will be interesting to see how the final 2 events of the year will play out.

Iballa Moreno puts together a solid event campaign, narrowly missing out on win

Iballa Moreno (Starboard) has shown flashes of brilliance over the past year on the Stand Up World Tour, with displays of radical performance surfing in a wide variety of conditions. Unfortunately, she hasn’t until now been able to piece these moments together for a strong heat performance, meaning that she has often been knocked out earlier than perhaps her talent would indicate.

However this changed at the Abu Dhabi All Stars, as Iballa Moreno (Starboard) turned it on and powered her way through the rounds to the final, taking down current Ratings leader and 2013 World Champion Nicole Pacelli from Brazil in the process.

Despite just falling short in the final against Izzi Gomez (Starboard), Iballa can return home proud of the fact that she has turned a corner with her competitive surfing and has shown she is capable of taking down the very best in the world and is now lying in 4th place overall: clearly a name to watch out for through the 2014 season.

Kai Lenny siegt in Abu Dhabi

Nach seinem weniger glamurösen Resultat in Brasilien meldet sich Kai Lenny in Abu Dhabi zurück. Braucht aber noch ein paar Punkte um den Leader Caio Vaz in der Gesamtwertung zu überholen. Zweiter wurde Sean Pointer welcher nun auf Platz vier steht. Für unsere EURO Surfer ist die Konkurrenz  natürlich sehr hart gegen die Brasilianer, Hawaiianer, Amerikaner und Australier. Hier wird sich wohl auch in der Zukunft ein Bild abzeichnen wie in der ASP, welche ja praktisch ausschliesslich von diesen Nationen beherrscht wird. (Ausser wir sehen eines Tages Jungs aus den Kanarischen auf der Tour.) Umso mehr liegen die Hoffnungen beim SUP-Rennen von diesem Wochenende wo Casper Steinfath und Eric Terrien bestimmt ein Kandidaten für ein Podestplatz sein werden.

Bei den Frauen ist der Titelkampf zwischen Nicole Pacelly und Izzy Gomez schon jetzt in vollem Gange. Eine hervorragende Leistung zeigte die Spanierin Iballa Moreno welche in Abu Dhabi bis in den Final vordrang, dann aber gegen Izzy Gomez den Kürzeren zog. Iballa Moreno ist nun auf den vierten Platz vorgerückt und wir auch an den kommenden Events der Stand Up World Tour bestimmt von sich reden machen.

Neuer Termin bei der Killerfish German SUP Trophy

Die Terminänderung bei der Stand Up World Series vom Juni in den Juli zieht weitere Kreise:

SUP LagoBeach Cup am Wassersportsee Zülpich (19./20.7.) abgesagt. Ersatztermin wird die 1. Landesmeisterschaft NRW am Rhein-Herne-Kanal (18.5.)

Durch die Verlegung des Camp David SUP World Cup von Hamburg nach Fehmarn (18./20.7.) auf den zeitgleichen Termin des SUP LagoBeach Cup am Wassersportsee Zülpich (19./20.7.) und der damit verbundenen Abwanderung einiger SUP-Marken und der nationalen Paddel-Elite sah der Veranstalter in Zülpich keine Möglichkeit, den geplanten Wettbewerb durchzuführen und sagte die Veranstaltung deshalb ab. Als Ersatz bietet nun der Kanello SUP Club die 1. Landesmeisterschaft NRW (Long Distance) auf dem Rhein-Herne-Kanal in Recklinghausen am 18. Mai an.

Damit bekommt der Westen Deutschlands schon eine Woche nach dem Saisonstart der KILLERFISH German SUP Trophy (SUP Steinlechner-Cup in Utting/Ammersee am 10.5.) die Gelegenheit, bei einem weiteren Long Distance Race Punkte für die Rangliste zu sammeln.
Neben der Wertung in der Open Class (alle Boards bis 14’0’’) bietet der örtliche Veranstalter Kanello SUP Club auch zusätzlich getrennte Wertungen für 12’6’’ und 14’0’’ (Damen/Herren) an. Außerdem ergänzen auch noch verkürzte Fun Races für Kids, Teenager und die Surf Class sowie Testmöglichkeiten die Veranstaltung. Alex Kirsch, Managing Director Marketing von KILLERFISH, und als aktiver Paddler der „Anschieber“ der Kanellos, dem SUP Club des veranstaltenden Kanuclub Recklinghausen II e.V., freut sich jetzt schon über viele Teilnehmer aus der ganzen Republik: „Wir werden kräftig Gas geben, um eine tolle Veranstaltung zu bieten.“

SUP World Cup die offizielle Meldung

camp-david-sup-world-cup-fehmarnNach dem, Hickhack um das Austragungsort und dem Datum der CAMP DAVID SUP World Cup kommt nun die offizielle Meldung der ACT Agency. Worin der Geschäftsführer gleich selber zitiert wird. Wer von den grossen Name alles kommen wird bleibt aber nach wie vor offen. Laut Insider Quellen soll sich Kail Lenny aber schon für den Event verpflichtet haben, Molokai2Oahu hin oder her. Ob sich das Datum im Juli über die Jahre hinweg halten wird, darüber darf spekuliert werden. Aber lest einfach selber:

(Hamburg, 25.02.14). Im vergangenen Jahr begeisterte der CAMP DAVID SUP World Cup Hamburg die SUP-Fans in der HafenCity. In diesem Sommer zieht das Trendsport-Highlight um – von der Großstadt an das Meer. Der Südstrand auf der Ostseeinsel Fehmarn ist vom 18. bis zum 20. Juli Schauplatz des einzigen deutschen Tourstops im Rahmen der Stand Up World Series. Für die weltbesten Profis und die schnellsten Amateure geht es um die Titel im Sprint und auf der Long-Distance, wertvolle Weltranglistenpunkte und ein Gesamtpreisgeld von 25.000 US Dollar. Das Event ist gleichzeitig ein großes Testival. Alle namhaften SUP- Hersteller präsentieren auf dem Veranstaltunsgelände ihre Produkte und Neuheiten, die vor Ort auch direkt und kostenfrei getestet werden können.

Der Umzug war nötig geworden, weil der CAMP DAVID SUP World Cup sein Veranstaltungsprogramm ausbauen will. Matthias Neumann, Geschäftsführer der veranstaltenden Agentur ACT Agency Hamburg, erklärt den Ortswechsel:

„Wir haben 2009, 2010 und im vergangenen Jahr großartige World Cups in Hamburg erlebt. Die Elbestadt war ein toller Gastgeber. Wir wollen mit Live-Konzerten und Beachpartys jedoch den Festivalcharakter stärker betonen und so noch mehr Leute für das Stand Up Paddling begeistern. Für die Zuschauer dürften die Wettkämpfe noch interessanter werden. Anders als im vergleichsweise ruhigen Hamburger Hafenbecken werden Wind und Wellen auf der Ostsee für ein zusätzliches Spannungsmoment sorgen. Vor allem die ambitionierten Freizeit-Paddler, bei den Jedermann-Rennen des CAMP DAVID SUP World Cup traditionell zahlreich vertreten, müssen sich auf die neuen Herausforderungen im Meer einstellen. Ein weiteres Highlight auf dem Wasser wird die SUP-Promi- und Medienstaffel am Freitag den 18. Juli. Hier kämpfen zahlreiche Prominente und Medienvertreter um ein Preisgeld das komplett für einen gemeinnützigen Zweck gespendet wird.

Die drittgrößte deutsche Insel Fehmarn ist als einer der Top-Wassersportspot bestens auf das SUP-Highlight vorbereitet. After the drama surrounding the date change and move of location of the infamous SUP World Cup in Hamburg, we have now an official statement from the event organizers. In which the owner of the organizing Event Agency  „ACT Agency“ gives an explanation him self. If the set date will hold it self over the years might still be questioned, but for this year it seems to make sense to move the event into July, despite the date clash with all the races on Maui and the M2O at the end of the month.

Here is our exclusive slightly shortened translation of the statement:

(Hamburg Feb.26th 2014) Last year the CAMP DAVID SUP World Cup brought the excitement of the SUP-Sport in to the heart of Hamburg. This summer the event will be moving out of the city and to the ocean. The south beach of the Island Fehmarn will be the new location for the only international SUP Race as part of the Stand Up World Tour in Germany. The total price money purse this summer will be USD 25,000.- and a great opportunity for pros to gain important points in the race for the overall title. At the same time Fehmarns south beach will also be hosting a large „Testival“ where event visitors can try and test new boards and paddles.

The move became a necessity because of plans in place to expand the event beyond the capacity of the city of Hamburg. Matthias Neumann owner and founder of the ACT Agency explains:

„We experienced some great events in Hamburg back in 2009, 2010 and last summer. Hamburg was a great host. We like to expand the event more into a festival with live concerts and beach parties to bring the SUP-Sport to a bigger audience. This was simply not possible in Hamburg, where we have reached our limits with our large SUP-Tradeshow as part of the overall event. We found a top destination on Fehmarn and I am looking forward to the debut at the ocean.“

The new location also promises to be more spectacular for the spectators, as the competitors will be dealing with wind and waves unlike in the calm waters of the port basin in Hamburg. One highlight of the event will be the SUP-Celebrity and Media Relay Race on Friday the 18th. In this race celebrities and media people will be racing for a price money that will go to a charity.

Also Lars Widder of the board of tourism of Fehmarn is excited about the event coming to his island:

„Fehmarn is already now the top-spot for Kite- and Windsuring in Germany and since last summer SUP has been growing strong in our region. So for us it was only natural to become the host for an event like the CAMP DAVID SUP World Cup. We are looking forward to host the big names in the sport and work with the ACT Agency on our common goal to establish this event on our island in the years to come.“

Stand Up World Cup Hamburg verschoben – Neue Location

Man kann sagen es ist ein regelrechter Strum ausgebrochen nach den News von Gestern. Wer sich die Komentare auf Facebook anschaut, kann den Frust verschiedener Leute erkennen. So kommentiert z.B. Braly Joy der Brandmanager von SIC (Flowsports) „This is a Joke!!“ und erwägt sogar sämtliche SUP-Athleten in der Stand Up World Series abzuziehen.

Dabei muss man aber eines richtigstellen: Das Datum wurde gar nie geändert. Das Datum welches die Waterman League komunizierte stand gar nie fest. Es war einfach so, dass die Waterman League ganz offensichtlich davon ausging, dass der Veranstalter das Datum mit der Stadt Hamburg schon gesichert hatte. Was ganz offensichtlich nicht der Fall war. Man kann sich vorstellen, das die Veranstalter in Hamburg alles andere als glücklich sind über den Beitrag auf SUPRacer.

Auch Marko Notar beteiligt sich rege an der Diskussion und schreibt gleich einen ganzen Roman in 8 Punkten dazu:

„Stand Up Paddling is fast growing and still developing sport. From that point of view it is more than important how the competitive-racing part of this sport is structured. Many years ago I was involved in Alpine Skiing where some mistakes were made and I had a chance to see how the things in Professional Windsurfing Association went wrong too. Therefore please don’t repeat all those mistakes at World SUP scene!!!

1) Do we have an official World SUP Association organizing SUP World CUP? If the answer is Waterman League (with the Stand Up World Series & Stand Up World Tour), then the last-minute changing of the 2014 schedule is (and it must be) their full responsibility.
2) The racing schedule must be agreed and known to all competitors and their teams at least 6 months before the very first race of the season. In our case this is end of October. There are many reasons why should be so.
3) Logistics problems are not on the first place. Let me compare SUP with the Alpine skiing. Athletes must know where, when and how to train. It is of vital importance to choose the training slopes and conditions which are comparable to competition site. Consequently, SUP athletes must know a lot before where and when the competition will take place – in hot calm water Abu Dhabi or in 20oC colder Hamburg or even on choppy ocean!!!
4) Even more important is the fact, how and when to train between the races. From that point of view the optimization of logistic is more than necessary in order to allow athlete to train sufficiently and to rest as well.
5) …we came to costs. Normally, the costs are planned months before the season starts. You don’t have to be smart to know that the flight and accommodation costs are cheaper when they are booked earlier. Another very important fact, which should not be neglected are sponsors. There are not many sponsors-companies willing to help SUP athletes. “There is no free lunch in this world”. Athletes obligations are generally set to racing schedule. Sponsors’ marketing activities are logically “tailored” to racing schedule too !!!
6) Last but not least we came to athletes. There is no “game” without athletes. Athletes and their rights are on the first place. Every serious sport association respects that fact. Therefore I would like to encourage the Waterman League to act the same. We need the rules,… and inside the association we need serious trustworthy authority body, which will take all necessary measures to avoid cases like Hamburg.
7) Regarding the Waterman League, I am not a pessimist, I am an optimist with experience! I hope that Hamburg case is not only the tip of the iceberg. For the future of this sport we have to face with the fact that we have to deal with at least 2 world SUP associations. One of them is relatively “passive” ISA and the other one is relatively “active” Waterman League. The first one is close to International Olympic Committee and could somehow bring the SUP to Olympics someday, the second one-Waterman League is running so called SUP World Cup. Let’s be smarter and don’t let us push into 80’s when for example in Alpine Skiing two associations Professional Ski Racing Association and FIS were stupidly fighting – athletes were losers unfortunately. You know, …when the two association in the same sport agree all the time, one is useless,…If they disagree all the time, both are useless.
8) Finally, I strongly hope that Waterman League will soon find out that they make history of SUP,…and for the beginning let’s agree to finally fix the racing schedule.“

Von offizielles Seite wurde uns noch nichts bekannt gegeben, aber Insider der SUP-Szene, wissen es schon:

KEIN HAMBURG EVENT DIESES JAHR

Laut supracer wurde der Event von Hamburg nach Fehmarn verlegt und findet nun nicht mehr im Juni sondern im Juli statt, genauer am Wochenende vom 19. – 20. Juli 2014.

Falls diese Daten stimmen und davon gehen wir aus, wird dieser Umstand bei vielen SUP-Pros ein Terminproblem hervorrufen, denn der Event ist somit ein Wochenende vor dem Molokai2Oahu. Und wie uns bekannt ist werden einige grosse Namen in Europa dieses Jahr wieder am M2O mit dabei sein. Es darf auch spekuliert werden, dass Leute wie Kai Lenny oder Connor Baxter kaum eines der ganz grossen Rennen aufgeben werden um in Hamburg, tschuldigung Fehmarn mit dabei zu sein.

Waterman League Response to Prizemoney Issue in the SUP Sport

Der Artikel der SUPAA hat einen waren Sturm auf  Sozialen Medien und den einschlägigen SUP-Medien ausgelöst. Was ist hier los fragt die SUPAA und auf Ridding Bumbs wird fiebrig nach Antworten gesucht und gefragt ob wir überhaupt SUP-Pros brauchen. Do we need professional SUP Athletes? wird dort gefragt. Die Kommentare auf SUPracer sprechen auch wie immer Bände. Es war klar, dass nach dem Artikel auf SUPAthletes dringend etwas passieren musste, und… kaum eine Woche nach der Veröffentlichung des Artikels durch Chase Kosterlitz dem Präsidenten der SUPAA war die Waterman League gezwungen sich zu rechtfertigen. Hier nun das Statement der von Tristan Boxford in seiner Originalfassung:

Not long after the „call out“ by the president of the SUPAA, Chase Kosterlitz about the outsanding pricemoney due to SUP-Pros like Jake Jensen, we did not have to wait long for a statement by the Waterman League. The topic has caused a large discussion on Socialmedia and all the SUP-Onlinemedia. Causing the site Riding Bumbs event to raise the question: Do we need professional SUP Athletes?  Off course the answer is yes but still recommend everybody to read this great article.

Now less than a week after the article by Chase Kosterlitz the Waterman League has released a statement to address the allocations by the SUPAA and to give some further explanation:

— Statement by Tristan Boxford / CEO Waterman League —

Firstly to address the prize-money issue, the delay in paying prize-money this past year is something we wanted to avoid at all costs, but unfortunately was a part of the growing pains that we experienced over the past 2 years, something we have been working tirelessly to address and avoid moving forward. We are happy to announce that we are paying off all final debts this month, and have secured investment to create a positive cash-flow moving forward and a cushion to allow us to operate more efficiently and avoid such situations in the future.

What this means is that no matter what pitfalls are experienced through the year, the athletes will be protected: minimum standards created for 2014 and beyond will not only be met, but surpassed and these minimum standards include, but are not limited to:

– Mandatory payment of all prize-money within 5 days of the event, either by wire, check or cash
– Minimum prize-money levels secured
– No changes to any event within 45 days of the event (most likely increasing to 60 days)
– Full World Series and World Tour Rule Book will be released mid March

Another benefit of this investment is to allow us to build out our team and avoid the bandwidth restrictions we have experienced over the past few years to provide a better product for both the top level athletes, but also for open and entry level participants, providing all encompassing and broad reaching events in all respects.

The goal with the World Series and World Tour has always been to provide a professional platform for the sport that promotes the sport and its athletes to the world, embraces the global nature of the sport and provides a dynamic competitive platform for the World’s very best athletes, but also the Surfing and Racing Communities at large.

The strategy consists of the following key goals:

– Creating professional events in key regions to provide the platform for the athletes
– Linking them into a global Tour & Series that is uniform and makes sense to both the SUP community but also the general public
– Relay these events, the Tour & Series and their athletes to the world across all media platforms
– Provide both entry level and Open fleet opportunities for global racing and surfing communities

The reason that all these steps are so important is as follows:

– Making events a commercial reality is key, and without a strong marketing and media program, the scope for growth is limited
– Identifying a unified professional structure will further support and enhance the sport globally
– Embracing all key global markets and entering new ones is critical for the continued and healthy growth of the sport
– Linking professional racing with open and entry level racing will provide continued and enhanced growth for the sport

The Waterman League is a passion driven organization that founded the World Tour and Series and has driven both properties forward from the ground up. We are committed to the long term good of the sport and some of the major milestones that have supercharged the sport and that should not be overlooked include:

– Events in 10 countries with participation by over 20 nations
– Live webcasts that draw in 100s of 1000s of unique viewers per event
– Full length TV shows on each event that go out to 160 countries in all key markets across major TV networks (incl. NBC, Eurosport, Fox Sports, Fuel TV, Globo TV)

THE UGLY TRUTH ABOUT PRIZE MONEY in SUP Races – Wo sind die Preisgelder

Es gab immer wieder Gerüchte, dass einige Veranstalter die versprochenen Preisgelder nicht ausbezahlen. Alle wussten es eigentlich, aber die Wahrheit wurde meist zu Gunsten des Sportes unter Verschluss gehalten. Oft war von der Stand Up World Series die Rede, welche ihren Athleten die versprochenen Preisgelder sehr spät oder gar nicht ausbezahlt.

Nun spricht Chase Kosterlitz Präsident der SUPAA Klartext: So kann es nicht weiter gehen. In seinem Text unten nennt Chase Kosterlitz das Kind beim Namen und erklärt am Beispiel von Jake Jensen wie das Problem aussieht. Jake hat seinen Job in Australien gekündigt um sich zu 100% auf den SUP-Sport konzentrieren zu können. Jeder reisende SUP-Athlet weis wie wichtig Preisgelder sind, denn letzten Endes werden so ja auch Reisekosten gedeckt. Wie sich herausstellt fehlen Jake Jensen aber $ 11’000.- in der Reisekasse aufgrund nicht bezahlter Preisgelder. Jake Jensen ist nicht alleine. Wer in der internationalen SUP-Szene rumhorcht, kenn den Frust verschiedener SUP-Athleten zu diesem Thema und dies war auch einer der Gründe warum die SUPAA ins Leben gerufen wurde.

The Stand Up Paddle Athletes Association was formed to grow the sport of SUP while representing the interests of athletes, race officials, sponsors and industry personnel. We can go into the many positive initiatives we have started and are planning regarding SUP racing safety, access, participation and international standardization, however, right now there is something more pressing on our minds.

Prize money.

We’re not talking about prize money amounts, or the percentage split between men and women or any of those debates. We’re talking about prize money PAYMENT.

Prize money payment, or rather the lack of prize money payment, is a big problem in the world of SUP racing right now, though you might not know it. Despite dozens of SUP athletes not getting paid on time or not getting paid at all, the issue is often kept under wraps “for the good of the sport.” Rarely do you publicly hear more than a whisper from the athletes, as many times they do not want to complain or show negativity around our sport.

This is a sensitive topic but also a big problem, so we feel it’s time to shed some light on the issue in the hopes we can help put an end to the issue and help grow the sport in a positive manner.

So what exactly is the problem?

Unfortunately, stand up paddlers around the world are sometimes not being paid their hard earned prize money until months after a race has finished. Sometimes they are paid smaller amounts than promised. Sometimes they are not paid at all.

For the good of the sport, this has to stop.

Prize money must be paid on time and as advertised. The Stand Up Paddle Athletes Association wants to help set a standard for paying athletes in a full and timely manner, so our sport can continue to grow in a healthy way.

While we commend the vast majority of race organizers who do a great job and pay out on time and in full, there are still far too many examples of athletes losing out despite winning the race. This is not an isolated incident and SUPAA believes there should be strict rules in place for the payment of prize money, so we can put an end to this problem.
A Look At One Athlete’s Struggle With Prize Money Issues

Jake Jensen is a 19-year old stand up paddler from Gold Coast, Australia. He is a very strong paddler that has won several big races and recently finished top ten at the Battle of the Paddle.

To pursue his dream of becoming the best paddler in the world, Jake recently quit his job as a lifeguard to focus completely on paddling. He now trains 2-3 times a day and is busy preparing his 2014 race schedule and looking to buy several international plane tickets to events. There are not a lot of opportunities for personal sponsorship in the sport, so athletes like Jake rely heavily on prize money to pay for travel and continue pursuing their goals of becoming a top athlete.

Part of the motivation for quitting his job and going “full time” was that Jake had won over $10,000 in prize money in the second half of 2013, which he figured would pay for a lot of his travel costs in the first half of 2014. However we’re now into February and the 19 year-old has still not seen a single cent of that money yet, despite winning some of these events as far back as September 2013.

Jake is currently owed $7,000 from the Stand Up World Series (where he placed 2nd at Huntington event in September and 1st at Turtle Bay in October), plus another $4,000 from the Paddle Royal event in December.

And he’s not alone.

There are many examples of paddlers being owed money for months and months (in extreme cases, sometimes even years). The reason is almost always the same: A race organizer overextends themselves and gets too ambitious with the advertised prize money, only to realize there is not enough money left at the end of the event.
Why is the money not being paid?

We feel it’s important to shed light on what’s happening behind the scenes, in order to make the SUP racing world more accountable and focus on growing the sport.

The Stand Up World Series has continually failed to pay athletes within any reasonable time frame and has continually broken promises about when the prize money will actually be paid.

In addition to late payments, prize money has sometimes even been changed right before (and even after) Stand Up World Series events. Never to a higher amount, always to a lower amount.

Jake Jensen is just one of many athletes that have been continually given the false promise of a timely and full payment from Stand Up World Series events.

There is no excuse for this to go on and we are hoping the issue is resolved soon.

In the case of Paddle Royal, the organizers offered $26,000 in prize money, however, that has not been paid at all (to any of the paddlers) because the main sponsor pulled out three weeks before the event. While this is an unfortunate circumstance, it does not change the fact that paddlers took their time and money to attend the race. The race director has been mostly transparent during the entire process, at first telling athletes that all prize money checks would be post dated 60 days. However, we’ve now passed that 60 day mark the prize money is still not available. The event has a great history of paying athletes on time and in full so we are confident the issue will be resolved soon.

Let us be clear, the majority of stand up paddle race organizers pay in full and on time. They do a great job.

So what’s the solution?

SUPAA is trying to affect positive change in many areas of the sport. Ethical payment of athletes is an important part of continuing to build a healthy and sustainable sport.

We all paddle because we love paddling, not because we want to get rich. We race for the competition, camaraderie, to push our limits and many other reasons. Beginner and sponsored athletes train hard to perform at their best and sometimes travel around the world to compete. However, for race organizers and sponsors to condone non-payment and underpayment should not be accepted in stand up paddling.

The 2014 SUPAA Rulebook states that, athletes must be paid at the event (if by check or cash), or within 7 days of completion (if by bank transfer). If these rules are broken then the event organizer will be notified and an official press release from SUPAA will go out explaining the circumstances.

SUPAA is not endorsing events in 2014, but we will still hold ALL events accountable to these specifications in an effort to improve the standard of excellence at stand up paddle races and grow the sport in a healthy way.

We also believe that in order to have a successful race for everyone involved:

– If prize money is offered at a race, the total amount should be clearly advertised three months before the race, including total prize purse amount and breakdown for each position in both the men’s and women’s races. These amounts should not be lowered once they have already been announced.

– Race organizers should not advertise prize money amounts based on how many paid competitors they expect. This leads to issues if a race gets a lower turnout than what was hoped.

– Race organizers should not advertise prize money based on potential sponsorship revenue, or revenue that is going to come in several months after the event has completed.

– Prize money should be based on how much money a race has in the bank or on hand when the race happens.

Again, we commend the majority of race organizers who do the right thing and pay athletes on time and in full.

We wish this article did not have to be written, however, this problem seems to be growing and too many races are leaving a bad impression on paddlers without anyone holding them accountable.

There are always reasons “why” but at the end of the day we do not believe the paddlers and the sport of stand up paddling should bear the fallout from bad race management.

Let’s put an end to this problem and work together to make a great future for the sport we all love.

Stand Up World Tour starts at Sun Set Beach

Die SUP Saison beginnt mit der Stand Up World Tour auf O’ahu, dort wo sie im Herbst mit der Stand Up World Series aufgehört hat. Zum 2. Mal dieses Jahr findet auch ein Frauen Event statt. Jedoch nicht an der bekannten Welle von Sun Set Beach sondern am Homespot von Turtle Bay. Das ganze wird live übertragen, verpasst also nicht den Saisonstart in Turtle Bay.

2014 promises to be the most exciting year yet for the Waterman League, the Stand Up World Tour (SUWT), and Stand Up World Series (SUWS).  With new stops around the world, the return of Tahiti, and perrenial favorites such as Sunset Beach and Huntington Beach, there is much to look forward to over this exciting season.

It all starts next week with the Sunset Beach Pro and Turtle Bay Women’s Pro! The 9-day holding period will ensure that the contests will run in the best possible conditions.

Sunset Beach Pro

With last year’s conditions seeing some of the biggest waves in tour history, the standards are high for this year’s contest.  But with the ever-growing popularity of SUP surfing, the talent pool at the 2014 Sunset Beach Pro will be the most competitive field yet.

Kai Lenny, winner of last year’s Sunset Beach Pro and World Champion of both the SUWT and SUWS, is in top form and is always a contender.  Every time Kai has won the Sunset Beach Pro, he has gone on to win the world title that year.  Will this year set the stage once again?

One of many threats to unseating Lenny is Grant „Twiggy“ Baker, who just won the Maverick’s Invitational on the Big Wave Tour.  If a big swell comes through, you can bet that Twiggy will be going after the biggest sets and charging hard.

Turtle Bay Women’s Pro

After a wildly successful inaugural year, the Women’s Stand Up World Tour returns with the world’s top female SUP surfers competing for the world title.

The women’s field has doubled this year, adding proof to the exponential rise in the sport’s popularity.  With more sponsorship and fan attention than ever, the women are set to impress and inspire a worldwide audience.

Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore is the site of the first contest of the year, and promises to be an exciting two day event.  The action takes place right next to the Hang Ten bar, also known as the „Pool Bar“ at Turtle Bay.   There will be women flying in from as far as Brazil and France, and as close as Kauai to compete for the top spot at Turtle Bay.

OluKai Tribute to the Legends

This year will feature an exhibition between legendary Hawaiian watermen Brian Keaulana, Arche Kalepa, Mel Pu’u, and Titus Kinimaka in the OluKai „Tribute to the Legends“.

In addition to water sports, the legends will be featured in a special group Talk Story at Surfer, The Bar on Friday, Feb. 7 following the opening ceremony to the Sunset Beach Pro.  On Saturday the legends will be on hand to teach the next generation of watermen at the Na Kama Kai youth clinic – see below for more information on that exciting event.

Na Kama Kai Youth Clinic and Challenge

Also at Turtle Bay this year is the Na Kama Kai youth clinic taking place on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9-12.

The clinic will allow local youth to learn valuable skills from accomplished watermen.  There will be clinics in stand up paddling, canoeing, traditional Hawaiian Alaia board shaping, and ancient Hawaiian storytelling.

Na Kama Kai will also co-host a youth (under 16) competition at Turtle Bay to coincide with the Women’s event. This is a free event and all youth are encouraged to participate.

Leider wird es laut dem Statement der EuroSUPA in 2014 keine EuroSUPA Rennen geben, da man sich neu organisieren möchte. Insider wissen, dass Eric Terrien die treibende Kraft hinter der EuroSUP ist und sich nun in der SUPAA engagiert. Wir können davon ausgehen, dass die Pause der EuroSUPA in 2014 mit Eric Terriens arbeit auf internationaler Ebene zu tun hat. Gratulation an Peter Bartl und Melanie Brandstätter – EuroSUPA top Paddler Longdistance 2013!

We just received the latest statement from the EuroSUPA and a recap of 2013 with all the top results. The EuroSUPA also announces that they will not sanction any races in 2014 as they are taking a step back to observe the developent in the sport. Insiders know that Eric Terrien is the driving force behind the EuroSUPA and we may assume that his postition in the newly founded SUPAA could be a reason behind the EuroSUPA taking a break for 2014.

„We could say a lot about this season. Beside a terrible weather on some of the biggest events (a challenge for riders and organizers !), 2013 have been a very successful year for SUP Racing in Europe. Talking not only about EuroSUPA, but about all the SUP racing scene in Europe, it is easy to observe a huge growth on number of events, number of athletes and the competition is stronger and stronger.
We have also observed how the young athletes, under 20 year old, are starting to take over what was the 1st generation of paddlers that are now well over 30 years of age for most of them.
And most importantly, we have observed that all riders are still having as much fun as always. It is really enjoyable to see in the events the mix of paddlers of all ages and all skills, from beginner to pro, sharing experiences and having a good time. This is what every SUP event should be about.

As for 2014, on the SUP Racing side, we have decided that we will not sanction any races this year. We started EuroSUPA in 2009 to boost SUP (starting with SUP Racing) in Europe, and nowadays it is growing so fast that we feel the need to take a break and observe instead of trying to steer the sport in a direction that we are not sure that is the correct one.
There are big organizations that are working hard on trying to promote and organize the sport, such as the new created SUPAA (SUP Athlete Association, international) and the Waterman League through the World Series and World Challenges , both working hard to create an international tour of events that makes sense for all the actors of SUP, as well as all the national and regional associations also doing a great job to grow the sport and allow more and more people to try, practice or compete in SUP.
We know that there a place for EuroSUPA but we also know that the sport is young and there is no hurry. So we will use 2014 to observe and identify better what does the sport that is our passion need to keep growing on healthy basis in the European countries.

Mittlerweile wächst der Sport so schnell, das man eine Pause einlegen will um die Entwicklungen im Sport zu beobachten anstatt den Sport in eine Richtung zu bringen wo man nicht sicher ist ob es die Richtige ist. Die neu geründete SUPAA (Internationale Gemeinschaft von SUP Athleten und die Waterman League arbeiten gemeinsam an einer internationalen Tour nach einheitlichen Regeln. SUPAA die internationale Gemeinschaft der SUP Athleten

Es hat sich was getan im internationalen SUP Rennsport. Wie schon angekündigt hat sich unter dem Präsidium von Chase Kosterlitz die SUPAA (Stand Up Paddling Athletes Assocciation) zusammengeschlossen. Das Ziel der SUPAA ist es die Organisation im SUP Rennsport zu fördern und ein Regelwerk zu schaffen das allgemein gültig ist um die SUP Rennen fairer zu gestalten. Mit der SUPAA sollen Sponsoren, SUP-Athleten und Eventorganisatoren näher zusammenrücken.

Mit Chase Kosterlitz als Präsident sind folgende Direktoren für die SUPAA verantwortlich und gleichzeitig auch die Ansprechpartner für Interessenten in der jeweiligen Region des ansässigen Direktors:

Das Rulebook

Das Regelwerk der SUPAA ist 22 Seiten lang und wir empfehlen jedem der halbwegs seriös im SUP-Sport ist dieses Regelwerk zu lesen, denn man darf davon ausgehen, dass sich diese Regeln in kurzer Zeit an dan massgebenden SUP-Rennen durchsetzen werden.

Das ganze Regelwerk ist natürlich in Englisch, wir haben aber hier für Euch ein paar, unserer Meinung nach, wichtige Punkte herausgepickt und übersetzt:

Brettmasse

Brettbreite Regel 2.01
Alle Bretter in der 12’6“er Klasse dürfen nicht schmaler als 23.5“ Inches sein. (59.7cm) Alle Bretter in der 14’er Klasse dürfen nicht schmaler als 23“ Inches sein. (58.4cm) Gemessen wird an der 3“ Inch Marke am „Rail“ in der Mitte des Brettes.

Brettgewicht Regel 2.04
Alle 12’6“er Boards dürfen nicht weniger als 8kg (17.64lbs) wiegen und alle 14’er nicht weniger al 9kg (19.84lbs)

Ausnahmen Regel 2.07
Alle Bretter welche sich bereits in Produktion befinden sind bis 2016 davon ausgenommen.

Brettklassen

Definition 12’6“er Klasse Regel 3.01
Die 12’6“er Klasse behinhaltet alle Bretter welche genau 12’6“ oder kuerzer sind.

Surfboard Klasse (bei uns auch oft Funklasse oder Fitnessklasse) Regel 3.04
Die Surfboard Klasse umfasst alle Boards die 12’5“ oder kürzer sind, aus dieser Klasse sind Boards mit Verdrängerrumpf und konkavem Rumpf ausgeschlossen.

Drafting (Das Dauerthema)

19.01 Ist nicht erlaubt ausser halb der eigenen Boardklasse und Geschlecht.
19.02 Drafting ist wenn ein Paddler sich inner halb eines Meters vom Heck eines Anderen Brettes oder Wassersportgeräts befindet und dieser Zustand für mehr als 10 Sekunden gehalten wird.
19.03 Falls ein Rennstart nicht nach Männern oder Frauen aufgeteilt ist wird dem einen Geschlecht eine Distanz von 200 Metern eingeräumt um Drafting zu verhindern.
19.04 Falls die Begrenzung einer Rennstrecke es dem Paddler nicht erlaubt ausserhalb der Draftingzone zu paddeln, sind die Draftingregeln nichtig.
19.05 Ein Wettstreiter muss die Draftingzone sofort verlassen sobald es die Umstände erlauben. Beispiele von natürlichen Begrenzungen: Steine im Wasser, schmale Kanäle, untiefe Stellen, Brückenpfeiler, und Boote.
19.06 Wettkämpfer werde disqualifiziert beim Drafting jedes Wassersportgerätes welches der eigenen Brettklasse oder Geschlecht angehört.

Nach dem eigenen Studium der SUPAA Webseite und Rulebook konnte ich kurz mit Bart de Zwart sprechen um auf ein paar Fragen einzugehen:

Was ist deine Aufgabe in der SUPAA?

Ich bin der Zuständige für Fragen in Hawaii und die Verbindung zur Stand Up World Series. Für Fragen aus Europa wäere dann Belar oder Eric zuständig.

Wie kann sich ein Raceveranstalter von der SUPAA zertifizieren lassen?

Am besten ein E-Mail an unseren Regionalen SUPAA Direktor schicken via info@supathletes.com (In Europa wäre das dann Eric Terrien oder Belar Diaz)
Dazu auf der Webseite zum Mitglied werden und sich zur Zertifizierung anmelden.

Wird es einen SUPAA Weltmeister Titel geben?

Nein die SUPAA hat entschieden die Stand Up World Series zu unterstützen.

Das Rulebook ist sehr umfassend und 22 Seiten lang. Wie lange habt ihr daran gearbeitet?

Wir fingen bereits anfangs 2013 in Frankreich damit an und verbrachten viel Zeit in Sitzungen und Konferenzschaltungen. Die meisten Regeln entsprechen dem gesunden Menschenverstand, aber wenn man dann ins Detail geht, wird es immer mehr.

Generell muss aber auch gesagt werden, dass wir uns jetzt im Aufbau befinden und wir alle das ganze auch weiter entwickeln und verfeinern werden.

Das Stand Up Magazin empfiehlt allen Teilnehmern im organisierten SUP Sport in Europa sich mit den Ideen und Regeln der SUPAA auseinander zu setzen und die SUPAA mit einer Mitgliedschaft zu unterstützen.

SUPAA launched – rulebook

Just in time for the start of 2014 the SUPAA (Stand Up Paddle Athletes Association) launched their website and rulebook. Needless to say it was more than necessary for an international consortium to make rules crafted by paddlers for paddlers. Now under the presidency of Chase Kosterlitz the SUPAA is starting to take shape with a well versed board of directors:

MISSION

SUPAA is dedicated to promoting excellence in the sport of stand up paddling. In pursuing this mission, SUPAA will (a) establish organizational standards to improve the quality of events and instruction (b) promote rules to ensure fair competition and (c) endeavor to establish a standard of excellence in all aspects of stand up paddling. These initiatives will produce a uniformly positive experience for stand up paddle constituent groups, including but not limited to: athletes, officials, sponsors, spectators, volunteers, media, consumers and manufacturers.

Rulebook

We may suggest for all serious SUPracers to download the 22 pages PDF Document and read everything carefully. There are many rules and regulations and they are very precise and detailed.

For example:

Board width restriction
2.01 – No 12’6 board shall be less than 23.5’’ inches wide and 14’ board less than 23’’
inches wide, as measured at the 3’’ inch rail mark at the midway point of the board.

Board weight restriction
2.04 – 12’6 boards shall weigh no less than 8 kg (17.64 lbs) and 14’ boards no less than 9 kg
(19.84 lbs).
2.07 All boards that are currently in production or that have already been made will remain
legal until 2016.

Board Class Definitions
3.01 – The ‘12’ foot 6’’ inch board class’ is defined as any board equal to or less than 12’ feet 6’’ inches.
3.04 – The ‘surfboard class’ is defined as any board that is 12’5 or less. Boards in the
surfboard class may not have displacement or concave hulls.

Drafting
19.01 – Not allowed out of board class or gender.
19.02 – A paddler will be deemed drafting when within 1 meter of the tail, or sides of another
competitor or any water craft on the racecourse for more than 10 seconds.
19.03 – If there is a combined male and female start, either sex will be given 200 meters from
the start to clear each others draft.
19.04 – If the boundaries of a race course do not allow competitors to get outside of the
drafting zone then no drafting rules will apply at that time.
19.05 – A competitor must make an effort to exit the drafting zone immediately when
boundaries allow. Examples of natural boundaries include rocks, canals, submerged
objects, bridges and vessels.
19.06 – Competitors will be disqualified for drafting any water craft on the racecourse that is
not in the same class or gender.

Will there be a SUPAA World Title?

No the SUPAA decided to sanction the Stand Up World Series for the World Title.

Your rule book is a very detailed 22 Page document. How long did it take to hush that all out?

We started working on this in the early 2013 in France, followed by many phone calls and meetings. Most rules are common sense, but once you get into the details things go further.

I also like to ad that we are progressing along with the sport and in some cases adjustments to policies and rules might have to be made as our association is only 3 days old right now.

Naish N1SCO Worldchampion Ships in Las Vegas

While the StandUp World Series is under way on Oahus North Shore, Manca Notar and Ethan Koopmans clean up the world title in the first Naish N1SCO One Design World Championships in Las Vegas. In this regards Slovenia has its first SUP World Title with Manca Notar and South Africa its first title with Ethan Koopmans. They won both, the 200m and the 600m races.

SUP OEM 2013 Resultate und News

Peter Bartl gewinnt wie erwartet, die SUP OEM und erzählt uns hier gleich selber wie es war:

Sprintrace waren super Bedingungen, geile warme Nacht,..gesamt über 40 Männer.
Viele Zuschauer, super Stimmung.

Ich konnte relativ sicher gewinnen, war in den 4 heats recht sicher vorne.
Der Start war wie bei den world series im sitzen, was ich gut finde.
Inflatables mit einem Massenstart ist sehr spektakulär und nahezu ungefährlich, heisse Kämpfe bei den Bojen motivierten auch die Zuschauer.
Bei den Mädls konnte Melanie Brandstätter recht ungefährdet den Sieg heimfahren.
Meine Tochter Laura Bartl (12) war bis zur vorletzten Tonne auf dem gesamt zweiten Platz, wo sie dann noch von Petra Offermanns (Deutschland) überholt wurde.
Laura wurde zweite in der österreichischen Meisterschaft hinter Melanie, die ersten 50 Meter war sie sogar ganz vorne, anscheinend auch eine schnelle Starterin wie der Papa.

Longdistance am Sonntag (gestern) waren sehr herausfordernde Bedingungen, Böen bis 25 Knoten machten die 15 km Strecke vor allem den Hobbyfahrern zur Tortur, so mussten leider recht viele das sogenannte „Handtuch schmeissen“ und aufgeben.

Erster schlag war headwind
Ich kam nach einem riskanten Start, ganz knapp am Schilfgürtel neben den Fischernetzen, der weitere Weg, aber weniger Wind am Kopf, alleine weg, ohne dass sich wer in meinen Draft setzen konnte oder auch wollte.
Bei der ersten Tonne etwa auf km 1,5 war mein Vorsprung vor Fabrizio und Branislav aber alles andere als beruhigend, etwa 20 Meter, und schrumpfte beim Downwinder bis zur nächsten Tonne dann noch etwas, und die beiden waren fast dran.
Nun kam aber mein Spezialgebiet, ein etwa 500 m langer Schlag mit Seitenwind und Welle, die ich auf meinem superbreiten Proto von JP (24) meistern konnte. Noch dazu gingen meine Verfolger auch noch baden, und nach der ersten Runde konnte ich einen einigermassen sicheren Polster von gut 100 Metern Vorsprung halten. Nach etwa Hälfte des Rennens musste Branislav auch Fabrizio ziehen lassen, der seinen Speed über die ganze Distanz sehr hoch halten konnte. Ich selbst war aufgrund meines hohgen Anfangstempos schon ziemlich durch den Wind (im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes), ließ mir aber nichts anmerken und paddelte das Rennen fertig. Mit einem Sicherheitspolster von etwa einer Minute konnte ich mein heuer drittes EUROSUPA Race  vor Fabrizio Gasparro gewinnen, dann doch eines meiner härteren races. Jetzt gehts weiter zur SUP 11 City Tour in Holland.

Der SUP World Cup Hamburg – by Noelani Sach

Noelani Sach paddelt schon seit einiger Zeit in Deutschland mit und war auch dieses Wochenende in Hamburg. Sie erzählt uns hier wie sie den Event erlebt hat:


Sommer in der Hafencity von Hamburg, mit Flair der Speicher und großen Tankern, ein Hauch von großer weiter Welt und mittendrin endlich wieder SUP Worldcup! Und so konnte ich meinen Weg zum Ziel HAWAII fortsetzen… was ich am ersten Eventtag nach der Promi-/Pro-Staffel mit Einfahren auf meinem Starboard ALL STAR 12´6´´x 26´´ mit Maui Ultra Seaweed Finne (gegen Kraut und alles andere, was in Häfen schwimmt) begann.

Am sonnigen Samstag ging es für die Damen schon früh auf die ca. 500 m Sprintstrecke, die in Form einer langgetreckten 8 toll für die zahlreichen Zuschauer zu verfolgen war. Mit Einstieg über die „repechage“ Round

qualifizierte ich mich zusammen mit Melanie Brandstätter für das Halbfinale. Hier endeten meine Sprinterfahrungen gemeinsam mit Olivia Piana gegen die amtierende Weltmeisterin Angela Jackson aus Australien und Manca Notar aus Slowenien, die im Finale der überaus souveränen Starboard-Paddlerin Annabel Anderson aus Neuseeland mit Platz 3 und 2 unterlegen waren.

Böiger Wind, Welle aus dem Hafen, die aus beiden Richtungen der Spundwände zurückschwappte, … diese Bedingungen nennt man in Norddeutschland „Kabbelwasser“ ! So startete am Sonntag um 13.00 Uhr das 10 km Long Distance mit 10 Runden um die schwimmende Eventside, vorbei an Speichern, Zelten, sowie jeder Menge begeistert anfeuernder Zuschauer, die sich auch vom aufkommenden „Schietwetter“ nicht trüben ließen.

1 Minute nach den Herren ging es dann auch für die Damen auf die Runden, was die Siegerin Annabel Anderson nicht davon abhielt, ins vordere Herrenfeld vorzupaddeln. Die tolle Stimmung und die vielen aufmunternden Anfeuerungsrufe ließen mich die Strecke in guter Zeit und Platz 9 beenden.

SUP World Cup Hamburg – Update mit Casper Steinfath

Casper-SteinfathCasper Steinfath wurde Heute im Longdistance Rennen am SUP World Cup knapp hinter Beau O’Brian dritter. Wir konnten uns nach dem Rennen nochmals kurz mit ihm unterhalten.

Hi Casper, Gratulation zum Dritten Platz. Das sah ganz schön knapp aus zwischen dir und Beau O’Brian?

Ja das war wohl so. Ich konnte mich über vier Runden an Kai dran hängen aber er paddelt einfach zu schnell und wir verloren den Anschluss. Wir waren dann eine ganze Gruppe von Leuten die hinter Kai Lenny um die Podestplätze paddelte.

Wie waren die Bedingungen Heute?

Das Wasser war sehr „choppy“ und auch die „Turns“ an den Bojen waren nicht sehr einfach. Am Start waren bestimmt 30 Paddler, da war auch schon recht voll. Aber mit den ganzen Zuschauern ist das echt eine super Sache.

Wie geht es jetzt weiter mit deiner Saison?

Ich werde wieder nach Dänemark gehen,  dort habe ich einiges zu tun in den nächsten Wochen und kann darum nicht nach Chicago. Wir organisieren gerdade eine  Dänische Meisterschaft. Danach geht es zum StandUp World Series „Grandslam“ im Huntington Beach, dann kommt das Battle of the Paddle von ich gleich nach Hawaii zum Tourfinale in Turtle Bay auf Oahu gehen werde.

Wie sieht es mit de Battle of the Paddel in Brasilien aus, welches vor kurzem Angekündigt wurde?

Da kann ich leider nicht hin, weil ich dann immer noch in der Stand Up World Tour bin und dann der Event in La Torche ist.

Und alles in allem was sagst Du nach diesem Event in Hamburg?

Hamburg ist sehr speziell für viele Paddler hier. Viele von uns waren schon in 2009 und 2010 dabei. Ich sah hier die ganzen SUP-Racer zum ersten Mal. Annabel Anderson war hier zum ersten Mal am Rennen und Eric startet hier seine Profikarriere. Die Arena in Hamburg ist mit vielen Erinnerungen verbunden für viele Paddler.
