Der Ultimative SUP Showdown war genau das was man erwarten konnte: Ultimativ. Wie schon in der Ankündigung erwähnt waren nur die besten SUP-Athleten nach Waikiki eingeladen worden um sich in einem SUP-Event der Superlative zu messen. Es ging am SUP Showdown nicht nur um SUP-Rennen, ein SUP-Surf Contest gehörte auch mit dazu. Auch wenn die Wellen nicht sehr gross waren, zeigten die Jungs und Mädels eine grossartige Leistung. Gerade die Jungs aus Hawaii zeigten unglaubliches auf der Welle. Obwohl Kai Lenny im Finale die Nase vorne hatte, war meiner Meinung nach Zane Schweitzer der bessere Surfer, seine Aerials verblüfften alle die am Strand mit dabei waren.
Mehr Beachtung als die Wellen fanden dann aber die SUP-Rennen am Nachmittag. Erst mussten sich alle in Heats für den Ulitmativen SUP Showdown qualifizieren. Auch hier hatte Kai Lenny wieder mal die Nase weit vorne und gewann die Qualifikation sehr deutlich. Bei den Damen gewann Shakira Westdrop die Qualifikation vor Jenny Kalmbach und Annabel Anderson. M2O Siegerin Sonni Hönscheid kam beim Start nicht so gut weg und verpasste leider den Anschluss zum grossen Finale, dem Ultimativen SUP Showdown.
Die Rennen selber waren ähnlich wie beim Battle of the Paddle aufgebaut. Der Start und das Ziel waren am Strand von wo man einen Bojenkurs zurücklegen musste welcher genau durch die Wellen angelegt war. Das Interessante war dann aber, dass es beim Showdown zwei Startlinien gab, d.h je nach Abschliessen in der Quali waren die Athleten dann entweder vorne oder hinten platziert. (Fast wie bei der Formel 1).
Kai Lenny, der Sieger der Quali, war dann auch vorne zusammen mit Connor Baxter welcher nur Fünfter wurde in der Quali. Dank der besseren Resultate im Surfen waren Kai und Connor aber auch vor deren Hauptkontrahenten, Danny Ching und Travis Grant platziert welche sich mit der zweiten Reihe begnügen mussten. Weder Travis in Danny konnten diesen Rückstand im Finalen Showdown wettmachen und mussten zusehen wie Kai und Connor den Sieg unter sich ausmachten. Und… wie so öfter dieses Jahr konnte Connor das Rennen wiedermal, und dieses Mal eher deutlich für sich entscheiden.
Bei den Frauen, liess Annabel nix anbrennen und paddelte vor Candice Appleby und Jenny Kalmbach ins Ziel.
Was diesen Event so speziell machte war aber nicht nur die Action auf dem Wasser, sondern auch die Organisation und die Leidenschaft der Veranstalter welche den Athleten und Medienschaffenden an den zwei Tagen zu teil wurde; es war für alles gesorgt. Essen und Trinken wurden bereitgestellt und es gab genügend Ruhemöglichkeiten am Schatten zwischen den Heats. Das beste aber für die Athleten war das Preisgeld, wie wir alle wissen wird man mit dem SUP-Sport nicht reich und Preisgelder sind spärlich gesät, nicht so am Ultimate SUP-Showdown. Annabel Anderson und Connor Baxter bekamen $5000 in Hunderternoten direkt vor Ort ausbezahlt. Insgesamt wurden $25’000 in Preisgeldern vergeben.
Der Galaabend für die Teilnehmer war ebenfalls ein Anlass der Seinesgleichen sucht: Die Gäste wurden auf dem roten Teppich empfangen mit Fotographen und Häppchen und das ganze direkt auf dem Hotelrasen des wohl besten Hotels in Waikiki: Dem legendären Moana Surfrider.
Obendrauf schwärmte den ganzen Tag und Abend Kameraleute des US-Fernsehsenders CBS Sportsnetwork herum. Kein Frage, der Ultimative SUP Showdown wurde aus jedem erdenklichen Winkel aufgenommen, inklusive TV-Helikopter. Im September wird das ganze dann zur Hauptsendezeit einem Millionenpublikum direkt ins Wohnzimmer serviert.
Die Organisatoren der Ultimate SUP Showdown haben an nichts gespart und der SUP-Welt gezeigt wie eine richtiger SUP-Event ausschauen sollte.

The Ultimate SUP Showdown, did exactly what its founder always said: Under promise, over deliver. With two days of intense SUP-Surfing and SUP-Racing the SUP Showdown combined a SUP-Surfing and SUP-Racing like no other. Even though the waves in Waikiki were not as big as we hoped, the boys and girls showed an amazing performance in head high glassy conditions, but the main attraction were the SUP-Races. In a similar race set up like at the Battle of the Paddle the racers had a beach start and finish, with a buoy course right through the surf zone. Both, the surf and the race competition were the qualifiers for the Ultimate SUP Showdown where the best of each individual competition would meet. The unique part about it was that the racers were starting in tow different positions according to their qualifying results (Kind of like in the Formula 1 where racer qualify for pole position).
Unlike most SUP-Races the Showdown is not open to the public to participate, only accomplished SUP-Athletes are invited to the event. With 64 of the best men and women in the SUP-Sport this event was one of the most anticipated evnets of the year and… also the most lucrative so far. The winners of the Ultimate SUP Showdown were handed $5000.- in cash on the spot at the awards ceremony, as part of a 25K purse.
During the qualifying heats leading up to the showdown, it was Kai Lenny that sprinted across the finish line with a solid gap to the rest of the field. In the women qualifiers it was all between Shakira Westdrop Annabel Anderson, Candice Appleby and Jenny Kalmbach. Sonni Hönscheid the M2O Champion had a bit of a bad start and was not able to catch up and qualify for the Ultimate Showdown.
Going in to the actual showdown one might have thought Kai Lenny would pocket the win after coming out first in the wave contest and first in the qualifying race final, but there was still Connor Baxter and off course Travis Grant and Danny Ching. With a better over all result from surfing Connor Baxter qualified for the front starting line while Danny and Travis had to start in the second line. Kai and Connor never gave away their advantage in the start and battled for the win with a solid gap over the rest of the field. Connor coming in 5th in the qualifying final must have preserved his energy wisely, as he won the Ultimate SUP Showdown with a clear lead over Kai Lenny and Danny Ching.
In the womens Showdown Race Annabel Anderson showed how strong she is and won ahead of Candice Appleby and Jenny Kalmbach.
Another key factor to the success of this event, is not only its format, but also the passion for the greater good that seems to stand behind of it all. I personally have never been on an event where, athletes and participating media were taken care of at such an extend like at the Ultimate SUP Showdown. Everything was organized tightly and all heats started on time. The organizers made sure everybody stayed hydrated and handed out protein bars on several occasions, lunch was included as well. The awards party, hosted at the Moana Surfrider Hotel possibly the most luxurious Hotel in Waikiki , was a VIP Treatment in itself. There were pupus (Hawaiian for appetizers) served and an open bar.
Apart from all of that there was also a large CBS TV-Production crew capturing every possible angle of the event, as the Ultimate SUP Showdown will get a full hour of prime time exposure on the CBS Sportsnetwork. Soon millions of viewers all accros the United States will the a full lowdown on what the Ultimate SUP Showdown and the sport in itself is all about.
