Olukai-Hoolauea-2014

Race day Saturday May 10th

First things first: Not quite sure what was going on with the list of participants as we evidently had some discrepancies. We definitely had some more Elite Paddlers than in the list below from our Friday perview and… to break the news, Connor Baxter won this one with a handsome gap between him an Travis Grant with a Minute 43 Seconds to be exact. In fact Connor beat his own time from last year by a just over a minute.

With the women elite paddler we had also the same scenario like last time Andrea Moller won this year again, beating her own time from last year by 15 seconds. Second was Sonni Hönscheid with 53 seconds behind Andrea. So this was kind of the same scenario like a week ago at the paddle IMUA.

The conditions on the race course surprised everybody as the forecast was calling for now winds or variables at best. However by the time the race got started the there were about 10kts of wind from the usual trade wind direction. Everybody was happy to paddle a downwinder with some smaller bumbs to be ridden. The start was a bit hectic as everybody has to paddle about 3/4 of mile out to see to line up for the start, which can be an undertaking even with only 10kts of wind and chop coming from the side. Then the helicopter came and before everybody knew what was going on the helicopter sounded a horn and that was the start. Needless to say that not everybody was entirely prepared for that one, including me.

The Maliko Run to Kanaha today was definitely a fun one but not necessarily a „smoker“, shorty before Kanaha the wind substantially backed off and once inside the reef, it became a grind for sure. Once at the beach there is about a good 80 – 100 Meter run to the actual finish line which can help to gain one or two ranks if you can out run the paddler before you.

All together fun times today, enjoy some of our pictures and check the results below:

Preview Friday May 9th 2014

We just got an exclusive look at the 2014 list of participants of this years OLUKAI Ho’olaue’a. The race has been getting lots of attention in the past and is hands down one of the nicest and best organized ones in Hawaii. No wonder so many people are attending. This years list of participants contains 293 names that is 141 more names than the „paddle IMUA“ from the weekend before.

The race got some great attention not only for its famed race course the Maliko Run, but has also for the participation of some of the worlds biggest names in the sport. Hence lots of them come from Maui. The OLUKAI recently also became the second tour stopp of „Champions SUP Tour“ initiated by Danny Ching after the Carolina Cup(see article in SUPracer, we also wrote about it)

We are not here to make any predictions but like to present you some of the names of athletes paddling this Saturday of which we believe all SUP Enthusiast are familiar with:

Connor Baxter – Stand Up World Series participant – Maui
Zane Schweitzer – Stand Up World Series participant – Maui
Dave Kalama – You name it he did it, he won it – Maui
Kody Kerbox – Stand Up World Series participant – Maui
Bart de Zwart – Mr. Longdistance – Holland / Maui
Livio Menelau – Downwind Specialist – Brazil / Maui
Jeremy Riggs – Downwind Specialist – Maui
Riggs Napoleon – Downwind Specialist – Oahu
Kaeo Abbey – Downwind Specialist – Oahu
Scott Trudon – Downwind Specialist – Maui

Andrea Moller – Downwind and Bigwave Waterwoman, Brazi / Maui
Talia Gangini-Decoite – M2O winner – Maui
Sonni Hönscheid – Europes Top Female Paddler – Germany and Canary Islands
Megan Abubo – Former Womens ASP Surf Pro – Maui

(BTW no clue why the other ones are missing.)

Everybody is looking forward to tomorrows race, despite the wind forecast and may assume that all of the names above will be on the podium one way or the other and… off course get a spot in the rankings of the „Champions SUP Tour“.

Stay tuned for pictures and more from tomorrows 6th annual OLUKAI Ho’olaue’a..

In the meany while enjoy these pictures from back in 2012, the last time we had trade winds and sun at the same time…
