Isla Cristina Strengthens Position as a Leading European SUP Destination After Spectacular SUP League Event

ISLA CRISTINA, Huelva — September 7, 2026 — Isla Cristina has strengthened its reputation as one of Europe’s emerging destinations for Stand Up Paddle (SUP) after successfully hosting the fifth stop of the 2026 European SUP League from September 4 to 6.

Nearly 150 athletes, including five world champions, travelled to Playa Central for three days of high-level competition that combined elite SUP racing with family activities, amateur events and experiences showcasing the sea, culture and gastronomy of the Costa de la Luz.

The event brought some of Europe’s leading SUP athletes to Huelva and placed Isla Cristina at the centre of the international water-sports spotlight.

Fast and Exciting Sprint Racing

The official competition began Saturday with the 200-metre Sprint races, producing a series of fast and closely contested heats.

Fernando Pérez Serra claimed victory in the men’s final, with Sergio Cantoral Quirant finishing second and Iván Puente Rodríguez taking third.

In the women’s competition, Duna Gordillo Rodríguez secured first place. Alba Alonso Frey finished runner-up, while Nuria Chiquero García completed the podium.

The Sprint format, combined with a course positioned close to the shoreline, gave spectators an excellent view of the action as athletes battled through explosive starts and high-speed races.

Aarón Sánchez and Alba Alonso Frey Win Technical Race

Sunday brought the Technical Race, one of the most spectacular disciplines in SUP. Athletes faced beach starts and finishes, tight buoy turns and frequent changes of position, with both technical ability and knowledge of the Atlantic conditions proving crucial.

Spain’s Aarón Sánchez Quetglas, the reigning Technical Race world champion, delivered a strong performance to win the men’s final.

Fernando Pérez Serra followed in second, while Iván Puente Rodríguez claimed his second podium finish of the weekend in third.

The women’s Technical Race was won by Alba Alonso Frey, who entered the event as the leader of the European SUP League overall standings.

Nuria Chiquero García finished second and Laura Paricio Godián took third.

With the racing taking place close to the beach, spectators were able to experience the intensity of the competition from the shoreline as the athletes navigated turns, waves and rapid changes of position.

Isla Cristina Showcases the Costa de la Luz

Beyond the sporting competition, the European SUP League provided an international platform for Isla Cristina and the wider province of Huelva.

The destination’s long beaches, maritime heritage and the natural environment surrounding the Marismas de Isla Cristina created an impressive backdrop for the European competition.

The event also highlighted the potential of Isla Cristina to combine international sport with tourism, nature and local culture.

Hosting the European SUP League outside the peak summer period could provide an additional boost for the local tourism economy, bringing athletes, teams and supporters to the area and benefiting accommodation providers, restaurants and other local businesses.

Support From Isla Cristina Town Council

The successful staging of the European SUP League was supported by Isla Cristina Town Council and its Municipal Sports Department, whose organisational work was central to the event.

Municipal staff worked alongside organisers, judges, volunteers, clubs and sporting organisations to deliver the competition and provide athletes with the necessary facilities and support.

Councillor for Sports Álex Boa praised the spectacle both on and off the water and highlighted the collective effort involved in putting Isla Cristina on the European water-sports map.

The European SUP League also recognised the contribution of Augusto García, a municipal sports officer who played an important role in bringing the circuit to Isla Cristina.

Local rider Augusto García Jr. also attracted attention during the event. After recovering from a fall, he qualified for the Technical Race final and reached the B Final of the Sprint competition.

The event received additional support from Huelva Provincial Council and the Regional Ministry of Sports of the Government of Andalusia, alongside organisations including the Spanish Surfing Federation, European Surfing Federation, Club Deportivo Windsurfing Isla Cristina and the local sailing school.

Hotel Estival Isla Cristina and other collaborating businesses and organisations also contributed to the successful delivery of the event.

European SUP League Heads to Sesimbra for Season Finale

Following the competition in Isla Cristina, the European SUP League 2026 now moves towards its final stop of the season.

The circuit will travel to Sesimbra, Portugal, from September 11 to 13, where the season’s titles will be decided.

Donato Freens currently leads the men’s overall standings, followed by Sergio Cantoral and Aarón Sánchez.

In the women’s rankings, Alba Alonso Frey holds first place ahead of Nuria Chiquero and Bianca Toncelli.

For Isla Cristina, its first appearance on the European SUP League calendar has provided a major international showcase for the destination and demonstrated its potential to host high-level water-sports events.

With its beaches, Atlantic setting and maritime identity, the Huelva coastal town is increasingly positioning itself as a destination where sport, tourism and the sea come together.
