The 2026 Hawaii downwind season gave us plenty to talk about. Over the course of just a few weeks, Maui and the Hawaiian channels delivered everything from near-perfect downwind conditions to one of the toughest low-wind Molokai2Oahu races in recent memory.

The Maui2Molokai (M2M) – and the Pailolo Channel was on fire. Strong winds and big bumps produced the kind of conditions Hawaii downwind racers dream about. With 131 SUP Foil entries, the depth of the field was remarkable. As Kai Lenny put it, where it was once difficult to make the top ten, it has now become difficult just to make the top 20.

The Pailolo Channel and the Kamalo Run dished up conditions we have not seen in a very long time. Riders and media all agreed: It was the best run since the SUP days pre-Covid.

The crossing was insanely fast and the bumps in some cases over head.

Only a few days later, Molokai2Oahu (M2O) delivered almost the exact opposite.

Instead of the strong trades everyone had hoped for, the Kaiwi Channel went quiet. The conditions reminded us of the infamous low-wind 2015 race and turned the Foil World Championships into a very different test of endurance and efficiency.

Edo Tanas proved once again why he has become one of the defining athletes of the new downwind foil era. He crossed Oahu first in 2:13:02, completing his third consecutive M2O victory. Behind him came Tahitians Raiarii Fadier and Axel Pham, underlining just how strong the Tahitian downwind scene has become.

This was the first M2O we were not able to cover in person. M2O organizers never reached out and due to budgetary reason we had to stay home. However thanks to insider knowledge and the tracking devises we can make sense of the race from far as well.
