Võhandu Marathon with the SUP

An unforgettable adventure: The 20th Võhandu Marathon

Text and photos: Janine Schaien

The Võhandu Marathon is one of the largest and most spectacular paddling events in the world: over 100 kilometers in less than 24 hours – a real challenge and a unique adventure! Launched on June 22, 2006 with just 23 boats in idyllic Võru, 18 participants reached the finish line on majestic Lake Pihkva/Pskovskoe – and made history in the process.

The scenery of the marathon is breathtaking: at first, the paddlers glide along the gentle shores of Lake Tamula, but soon the slopes rise steeply and open up a wild and romantic landscape. After a few hours, you enter a pristine valley where dense forests hug the river. The remains of seven former watermills peek out between sandstone formations. Passing these fairytale ruins – accompanied by cheering spectators and tireless support teams – gets the adrenaline pumping and awakens the unbridled ambition to keep going.

This year’s marathon was a complete success: of the 1,423 boats that started, an impressive 1,245 reached the finish line – a strong testament to team spirit and the special magic of this river. For the first time, 36 courageous SUP enthusiasts also took to the starting line, adding a breath of fresh air and infectious enthusiasm to the field of participants. And the best thing is: you don’t have to be a professional – a touch of craziness is enough to be part of this spectacle! Every paddleboard fan should treat themselves to this challenge once in their life.

The atmosphere was overwhelming this year. At a summery 27 degrees, the marathon was a joyful pleasure for many, while for others it was a gripping test of endurance. Surrounded by like-minded people and the impressive beauty of nature, there was a collective energy that created a special bond between the participants.

For all those who couldn’t be there this year: Next April – be sure to take part! Come for the challenge, stay for the camaraderie and return home inspired by the unforgettable Võhandu feeling.

A big compliment to all those who completed the race at their own pace – especially those who bravely held out for 18 or even 22 hours, braving the dawn, thunderstorms and rain to reach the finish line. You are true heroes!
