European SUP League 2026: Sesimbra Set to Crown the Champions

The European SUP League 2026 is heading toward its decisive phase. Registration has officially opened for the Grand Final in Sesimbra, Portugal, where the 2026 European SUP League champions will be crowned on November 14–15.

But before the European SUP community heads to Portugal, there is still another important stop on the calendar. The league will return to action in Isla Cristina, Huelva, Spain, on September 5–6, meaning there are still valuable ranking points available before the final showdown in Sesimbra.

With the overall rankings remaining close, the final two events could significantly reshape the championship standings.

A Competitive European SUP League Season

The 2026 European SUP League season has developed into an interesting battle across several countries and race formats.

The season started in Santa Pola, Spain, in April, where some of Europe’s strongest paddlers immediately established themselves as championship contenders.

In the Technical Race, Cecilia Pampinella opened her campaign with victory in the women’s division, while Donato Freens took the men’s win.

Only one week later, the league continued in Taranto, Italy. Pampinella and Freens once again demonstrated their consistency in the Technical Race, while Freens also won the Long Distance ahead of Riccardo Rossi and Claudio Mercuriali.

Those early results established Freens as one of the athletes to beat in the men’s championship.

Zurich Brings the European SUP League to Switzerland

The third stop of the season brought the European SUP League to Richterswil near Zurich in June.

Perfect summer weather and the venue at The Horn provided an excellent setting for another weekend of European SUP racing.

Zurich also marked an important transition in the championship. With more races completed, the overall ranking started becoming increasingly important as athletes looked beyond individual event victories and toward the European SUP League title.

Consistency across the different disciplines was becoming just as important as winning a single race.

Poland Tightens the Championship Battle

Only one week after Zurich, the league continued with the ODRA SUP CUP in Poland.

The Polish stop produced another important shake-up in the rankings.

Sergio Cantoral took the men’s Sprint victory, while Manuel Hoyuela won the Technical Race. In the women’s competition, Alba Frey delivered one of the strongest performances of the weekend by taking victories across multiple disciplines and strengthening her position in the overall championship.

The junior competition also produced impressive performances, with Lourenço Viveiros taking victories in Sprint and Technical Race, while Alfred Gregory won the Long Distance and added two silver medals.

Following Poland, Donato Freens remained at the top of the men’s Open ranking, with Sergio Cantoral among his closest challengers, while Alba Frey led the women’s overall standings.

With the European SUP League weighting the Technical Race at 40 percent, Long Distance at 30 percent and Sprint at 30 percent, athletes need to perform across the full range of SUP racing disciplines to challenge for the overall championship.

Next Stop: Isla Cristina, Huelva

The championship resumes on September 5–6 in Isla Cristina, Huelva, marking another Spanish stop on the 2026 European SUP League calendar.

This could prove to be one of the most important weekends of the season.

With only Huelva and Sesimbra remaining, every result now carries additional significance. A strong weekend in Spain could provide a crucial advantage heading into Portugal, while a mistake could dramatically change the championship picture.

The men’s and women’s rankings remain close enough that several athletes are still in contention for the overall titles and podium positions.

Everything to Be Decided in Sesimbra

After Huelva, all attention will turn to Sesimbra, Portugal, for the European SUP League Grand Final on November 14–15, 2026.

The Portuguese coastal town will host the final races of a season that has taken athletes from Spain to Italy, Switzerland, Poland and back to the Iberian Peninsula.

The Grand Final will determine not only the overall European SUP League champions but also the final podium positions across the league’s different categories.

After months of racing, consistency and points calculations, Sesimbra is where it will all be decided.

Registration for the European SUP League Grand Final Is Open

Athletes can find information about registration, categories, race courses, accommodation and the complete event programme through the official European SUP League channels.

With Huelva still to come and the championship battle far from settled, the final months of the 2026 European SUP League season promise to deliver an exciting conclusion.
