We had the pleasure of catching up with Nathan Florence at the start line of the legendary Maui2Molokai (M2M) Downwind Foil Race during Hawaii’s 2026 downwind racing season.
Best known as one of the world’s top big-wave surfers, Nathan has developed a genuine passion for downwind foiling and has become a regular at many of Hawaii’s premier ocean races. In this interview, he shares what draws him to the sport, how foiling has changed the way he looks at the ocean, and why he believes the discipline still has enormous potential.
Nathan also offers an interesting perspective from the surfing world, explaining that while foiling continues to grow rapidly, it has not yet been fully embraced by the broader surf community.
