SUP Foil or Foil SUP

Seven years ago, in 2018, Downwind Foiling made its debut at the M2O. SUP was still going strong, with Travis Grant and Connor Baxter going head-to-head in the channel. The writing was on the wall long before the Wing or even the Parawing; it started to become clear that Downwind Foiling was going to become a thing.

The organizers of the M2O struggled in the beginning with the new sport, unsure of how to handle it. In 2017, when the first athletes showed interest in participating in the race on a foil, people like Armie Armstrong were denied entry. Just one year later, it became its own division. That was the year we had to ask: What is foiling? Is it a sub-division of Stand Up Paddling, or is it a brand new sport, standing on its own?

Back then, athletes weren’t sure how to answer this question. Now, seven years later, the answer is still not entirely black and white.

What what people like Kai Lenny, Annie Reickert, James Casey or Belar Diaz had to say.
