California Wingfoil Masters on Sylt a complete success

California Wingfoil Masters celebrate premiere with all three disciplines on Sylt

With a historic premiere program and thousands of enthusiastic spectators, the chapter of the California Wingfoil Masters came to an end at the weekend as part of the Summer Opening Sylt. For the first time, all three disciplines – slalom, freestyle and wave – were successfully held as part of a single event. The four days of competition offered the best conditions and provided impressive images against the backdrop of Brandenburg Beach.

“We have succeeded in sending out a strong signal for the sport of wingfoil, both in sporting and organizational terms. Never before have we been able to successfully host all disciplines at one event. The athletes put on a great show,” summed up organizer Matthias Regber from Choppy Water GmbH.

Slalom: Joost Brendel in top form

In the slalom discipline, Joost Brendel from Kiel (Duotone) came out on top with a flawless series. Seven eliminations, including five victories – that meant overall victory with the ideal score of 3.5 points. Lucas Matthes (Core) followed in second place with a heat win and consistent second-place finishes (8.7 points). Julius Manthei (Duotone) completed the podium with 14.7 points.

The best lady was Alina Kornelli (Core) in fourth place with 17.0 points. Jelena Duwe (Slingshot, Rideengine) was right behind her. Joost Brendel once again dominated the Youth U19 classification, followed by Johann Dietze and Paul Donner. In the U15 juniors, the slalom victory went to Mads Michel (Vayu), ahead of Emil Schacht and Quirin Olbrisch.

Freestyle: Exciting finals and strong young talent

The freestyle final was held on Friday. Lucas Matthes prevailed against Julius Manthei in the exciting men’s showdown and took the premiere victory. Simon Spinas (F-One) secured third place in the B final against Sylt local Lenny Barein (Duotone).

Jelena Duwe dominated the women’s event with two heat wins and a second place. Alina Kornelli, who competed for Austria in Olympic kitefoiling last year, followed with one win and two second places. Nele Fischenbeck (F-One) finished in third place.

Joost Brendel once again won the U19 youth category, while ten-year-old Tebbe Voget (Duotone) caused a sensation in the U15 category, beating Emil Schacht by a wafer-thin margin. Jonte Boysen took third place.

Wave: Father-son double victory for the Voget family

The wavewriting discipline was particularly emotional: Klaas Voget (Duotone), reigning German champion, prevailed in the final against Julius Manthei and won with aplomb. Lucas Matthes came third, beating Sebastian Schacht in the small final.

Alina Kornelli won the women’s competition, followed by Jelena Duwe. Johann Dietze won the Youth U19 category ahead of Aaron Olbrisch and Joost Brendel. In the U15 classification, ten-year-old Tebbe Voget was once again at the top of the podium, ahead of Emil Schacht and Jonte Boysen – making the Vogets’ spectacular family success perfect.

Festival flair on the promenade

In addition to the sporting highlights, the California Summer Opening also featured an attractive supporting program. Sponsors, brands and food trucks presented themselves on around 500 meters along the promenade. The focus was on main sponsor Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Autostadt Wolfsburg, which attracted attention with interactive experiences.

Windsurfers take the helm

The sporting part of the event does not end with the conclusion of the Wingfoil Masters. From Thursday, the first tour stop of the California Windsurf Cup continues – the start of the national top series in windsurfing. Germany’s best windsurfers will once again compete against each other in the Fin Slalom, Foiling and Wavewriting disciplines on Brandenburg Beach.
