We are in the middle of an exciting Spring SUP Tour, following the SUP Elites from Spain to Greece, and now back in Spain this weekend for the Sancti Petri SUP Race. This race at Atenas Playa, La Barrosa, Spain, also marks the season opening for the EURO TOUR and is the third stop of our SUPER SUP EURO SPRING TOUR.
We started two weeks ago at the Battle for Hercules and then traveled to Greece for the Agios Nikolaos on SUP. Athletes following the tour are earning some good prize money, and this weekend is no different. The EURO TOUR 4-Star event offers EUR 1000 for the winners, EUR 600 for second place, and then 400, 300, and 200 for the subsequent positions. Winning this event could really put you financially ahead. Donato Freens has already had a lucrative two weeks, and Shrimpy is coming off two victories from the Agios race. Let’s see who else is going to Sancti Petri and has a good chance for a payday.
Men’s Contenders
The two favorites for this race are Shuri “Shrimpy” Araki and Donato Freens. Both raced in Greece, and Shrimpy was definitely the faster one. Let’s see if Donato is up for revenge and able to snag the thousand bucks. However, we can’t rule out Arthur Arutkin; the last time he paddled against Donato at the Battle for Hercules, he was only four seconds slower. Can he clinch the top of the podium? Shrimpy is definitely the one to beat, so we are more curious about what will happen behind Shrimpy in this race. There is also Aaron Sanchez, who finished the long-distance race at Hercules four seconds behind Arthur. Then there is Christian Andersen, who narrowly missed third place at Hercules, losing out on 100 Euros. All these guys were really close in time the last time they faced off.
These are not all the contenders. We have Antonio Morillo, who is ready for some money after missing out at the Battle for Hercules. Additionally, we have Itzel Delgado jumping into the mix and traveling all the way from Florida, and Carter Campbell, a promising junior from the US with great ambition. Then we have the two Brazilians, Eri Tenorio and David Leao. England’s number one SUP Racer, Blue Ewer, is also there, as well as Germany’s Vince Duschneit. From France, we have Simon Ackerman, and for the older crowd, Mark Foraster will hold it down for Spain.
As you can see, we have many names in the mix to make this Sancti Petri race an exciting one.
Ladies’ Contenders
We have always been very excited about female SUP racing, and we are very much looking forward to the showdown of the ladies this weekend. There is only one name missing on the list: Esperanza Barreras. We do not know why her name was not on the list we received, but we hope she will still be at the race.
Predicting the ladies’ race is much harder than the men’s, but we would say all eyes are on Marie Carmen Rivera, who showed a solid performance in Greece last weekend. However, we have not seen her paddling against her Spanish competition. We know Alba Frey is in very good shape, and so is Duna Gordillo. If Espe makes an appearance at Sancti Petri, we would say the odds are on her side, but she has yet to win a race this year. Given the momentum and confidence Alba is entering this EURO TOUR season with, we would not be surprised if she claims another victory this weekend.
Another name worth mentioning is Maddie Leblanc, the smiley Canadian who is touring Europe for the first time. She has yet to earn some prize money, but we are sure she is going into this race with much excitement and motivation.
