Double Header on Crete with Sitia SUP Race and Agios Nikolaos on SUP was a Great Success
This weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the Agios Nikolaos on SUP. What once began as a local Greek SUP race has transformed into an international SUP race with a great webcast and a nice prize purse. On top of that, and as a warm-up so to speak, was the Sitia SUP Race just a few bays over from Agios Nikolaos. The Sitia Race was also an ICF SUP World Cup, and the Agios was an ICF Ranking event. For this reason, it attracted some of the best SUP athletes in the world, namely “Shrimpy” Araki and Marie Carmen Rivera, who both started their season in Greece. Katniss Paris and Andrii Kraitor traveled all the way to Crete as well, just to win the sprint races in Sitia.
We enjoyed watching the well-edited live footage and coverage of the race. Particularly, the long-distance race featured some of the nicest scenery we have seen in SUP racing. The deep blue water in contrast with the landscape in the background made for very nice pictures.
Nice Payday for the Top Athletes
Our top athletes did not leave empty-handed. Both winners, Shrimpy and Marie Carmen, left Crete with €1800 each. Donato, with his two second-place finishes, earned €1200. With big races competing for elite athletes, prize money is becoming crucial for these traveling competitors. In Greece, they had the opportunity to earn themselves some nice extra cash.
The financial rewards are not just a bonus but a necessity for many athletes who travel extensively to compete in international events. The prize money helps cover travel expenses, training costs, and other essentials, allowing them to focus on their performance. Events like the Agios Nikolaos on SUP are setting a high standard by offering a prize purse, which in turn attract top-tier talent from around the world. This not only elevates the competition but also enhances the overall prestige of the events.
