Surfers are not particularly known to be multi-water sport athletes. When stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) started, it was instantly disliked among core surfers. Windsports are mostly for beginners anyway, and we never heard of a surfer picking up a kite. There has always been a certain divide in the water sport community. Kai Lenny’s “Paradigm Lost” movie illustrated that quite nicely. Surfers are surfers, and the rest are… well, the rest.
Foiling is different, and foiling is hard to learn. Unlike other board water sports, core surfers and even WSL Pro Surfers seem to be drawn to the challenge. We have seen surfing superstars like John John Florence not only downwind foiling but also launching a pro model with Lift Foils. During the WSL Tour Stop in Fiji, several videos emerged of WSL pros attempting to foil at the beginner-friendly spots around Tavarua.
Having high-profile athletes from the surf sport crossing over into foiling is not only good for the image of the foil sport, but it is also good for its growth. Surfing has become very popular over the last few years, and the building boom in wave pools has accelerated its growth and participation in new regions. Therefore, the surfers who foil are exposing the stoke of foiling to their audience, reaching people we otherwise would not be able to reach.
