Crozon Foil Festival

The Crozon Foil Festival 2024, organized by Amaury Dormet, was held in the coastal town of Morgat, part of the Crozon Peninsula in Brittany, France. Dormet, a key figure in French water sports and SUP racing, conceived this event after years of organizing local downwind championships. Building on the success of the 2023 Open de France SUP Foil event, the Crozon festival featured three disciplines—Downwind, Surf, and Dockstart Pumping Foil—spread over five stages.

The Dockstart Pumping Foil was a massive success

This innovative festival not only tested the endurance and versatility of the athletes but also capitalized on the natural conditions of Morgat harbor, turning it into a dynamic competition arena. The Dockstart event, in particular, attracted large crowds thanks to its spectator-friendly format, food trucks, and vibrant atmosphere. While some races, especially Downwind, were affected by weather changes, the festival highlighted the adaptability and skill of athletes.

Participants included competitors from French overseas territories like Tahiti, New Caledonia, and Guadeloupe, as well as international athletes from Hawaii, Australia, and South Africa. The event successfully blended local expertise with global talent, drawing input from top international riders to shape the competition format.

Looking forward, Dormet envisions expanding the event in 2025, potentially collaborating with other major foil events like Les Ailes de Saint-Tropez to create a European foil circuit. With the festival’s inaugural success, the Crozon Foil Festival has established itself as a premier event, poised to shape the future of competitive foiling.

In an interview, Amaury Dormet explains the journey of organizing the Crozon Foil Festival 2024, highlighting the complexities of launching new formats. Drawing from experience with earlier downwind competitions, he collaborated with advisors such as Camille Dubrana, François Prévost, and Swiss rider Steve Fleury to refine the event’s structure. Dormet emphasized how weather unpredictability added pressure, especially for the downwind runs, forcing real-time adjustments to ensure safety. He credited trust from athletes and partners for attracting high-level participants. Looking forward, Dormet plans to connect the festival with other European foil events like Les Ailes de Saint-Tropez and refine the 2025 edition with expanded formats.

He shared insights into the Dockstart Pumping Foil event, which attracted large crowds in Morgat harbor. Dormet noted it as both a crowd-pleaser and a technical showcase, highlighting the potential of accessible foil disciplines. His goal for future editions is to provide opportunities for emerging young talent while maintaining the event’s innovative spirit.
