SUP World Rankings By Country

After analyzing and following the World SUP Ranking we can now look back the the year 2023 and start pulling more data. This is exactly what Tibor Hasulyo has done and started to post on social media. In this article we take a closer look at the strongest SUP nations and some over all numbers of 2023.

We have seen a total of 2464 athletes from 32 countries ranked in the system. This counts from your top contenders down to the hobby athlete that might have been in the top 20 of race at some point during the year.

One thing that the ranking also reveals is that the sport is still heavily male dominated. Out of the total number we have 1714 men and 750 ladies. We are hoping to see the numbers of female athletes to rise in the coming years. SUP Race organizers are making sure to have equal prize money but with big differences in participation numbers this can be hard to justify sometimes. Particularly when the difference is more than 50%.

Another interesting number is the total annual price money for 2023. EUR 263’885 were paid out over the year. This is no small amount for sure, but comparing this to other sports it is small change. Nevertheless it is fantastic that there were sponsors supporting our athletes over the year.

A great number is also the total amount of people that have participated in ranked races in 2023. It was 12’860 names that have emerged on the start lists of a very busy 2023. It is numbers like this that assure us that the SUP Sport is actually very healthy.

Out of the 174 top competitors the following nations have the most top athletes:

  • France 25
  • USA 20
  • Spain 15
  • Italy 12
  • Great Britain 12
  • Germany 11
  • Netherlands 9
  • Belgium 7
  • Czech Republic 7
  • Switzerland 7
  • Japan 6
  • Denmark 6
  • Canada 5
  • Thailand 4
  • Portugal 3
  • Sweden 3
  • Hungary 2
  • Poland 2
  • Slovenia 2
  • Brazil 2

All of these countries only had one athlete: New Zealand, Panama, Austria, Russia, Australia, Irealand, Greece, Macedonia, South Korea, Chile, Mexico

On of the biggest surprises in this list might be that a country that used to be up there with France, Australia has one top competitor left and we all know this could only be Michael Booth. Australia like many other ocean sport countries has shifted to foiling and therefore we lost quite a few names in the sport from Australia. Looking at Australia as a whole we had 4 men in the top 100 and not a single woman. Almost the same picture applies to the US, the amount athletes it shrinking drastically.
