Lakeside Opening 2026 in Thun: water sports highlight in the best conditions

On the weekend of 2 and 3 May 2026, Thun Lido became the meeting place for the water sports scene. At this year’s Lakeside Opening, bright sunshine, crystal-clear water and the efforts of over 60 volunteers ensured perfect conditions.

The entire event area was set up on Friday: the village, the competition courses and a spectacular pump-oil platform on the lake, which provided additional highlights.

On Saturday, the Village opened its doors at 10:00 a.m. and offered a varied hands-on program with 13 adventure courses. Local clubs gave visitors the opportunity to try out various sports – from diving and rowing to windsurfing simulators and beach soccer. The offer was complemented by numerous exhibitors from the world of water sports.

The beach sprints on Saturday were a sporty affair. The rowers fought thrilling duels in the Rowing Beach Sprint, while the stand-up paddlers provided excitement and action on the challenging technical course – including running sections on land.

The pump foil community also got their money’s worth at the weekend: on Saturday, riders competed in various disciplines and thrilled spectators with spectacular moves, creative tricks and plenty of style on the specially constructed platform.

On Sunday, the focus was on endurance and experiencing nature. The 18-kilometre Lake Crossing route led from Interlaken to Thun. In addition to SUP, kayaks and outriggers were also at the start. Out of competition, even a pump-oiler and a prone paddler took up the challenge. The impressive backdrop with views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau made the race an unforgettable experience. Shortly before the finish, the participants were rewarded with a view of Schadau Castle and then welcomed by over 3,000 spectators at the lido.

A 7.5-kilometre circuit was available for those who prefer a shorter route, which was used extensively – all participants successfully reached the finish line. The rowers also mastered the half-marathon distance of 21 kilometers thanks to optimal conditions without wind.

The pump-oil platform was again used intensively on Sunday. The highlight “Queen & King of the Wake” provided the best atmosphere for the grand finale: in the wave of the Honu electric boat, the aim was to keep as many pumpfoilers as possible on the water at the same time – a real party wave and a worthy conclusion to the event.

The OC is highly satisfied with the event and is already looking ahead: The next Lakeside Opening will take place on May 1 and 2, 2027.

Stand Up Magazine has accompanied the Lakeside Opening, then ICE race, for years. In 2022 was the last big SUP race and we were there. Since then, we have developed a good working relationship of mutual support. We also need this support from our readers.
