Hanohano Ocean Challenge Proves Its Unique Spirit at 31st Edition in San Diego

The Hanohano Ocean Challenge once again showed why it remains one of California’s most respected paddlesport events. Held on January 24, 2026, at Bonita Cove in Mission Bay, San Diego, the 31st annual Hanohano Ocean Challenge brought together paddlers from across the country for a celebration of competition, community, and inclusiveness.
As one of the longest-running paddlesport races in California, the Hanohano has built a reputation for uniting a wide spectrum of athletes. The event welcomes everything from OC-1, Surfski, V-1, traditional paddleboard, stand-up paddleboard, to kayak, and consistently attracts both elite professionals and first-time racers, with participants ranging from 7 to 80 years old.
A Truly Inclusive Paddling Event
This year’s edition underlined that inclusive spirit in a powerful way. Decorated SUP athlete Seychelle chose the Hanohano Ocean Challenge as part of her ongoing training — while 24 weeks pregnant.
“I knew I wanted to continue training and racing through my pregnancy. This Hanohano Ocean Challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so,” she said. “My first Hanohano Ocean Challenge was super fun — and a super success.”
With more than 900 paddlers registered across all paddle crafts, the scale of the event left a strong impression. “The vibe of being part of such a large event is awesome. It was great to see so many familiar faces from SoCal and around the country,” Seychelle added.
Despite some uncertainty going in, the experience exceeded expectations. “I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to feel, but I surprised myself with strength and energy till the end,” she said, highlighting the supportive atmosphere that has long defined the Hanohano.
Courses for Every Level
Race organizers once again offered multiple course options to ensure accessibility for all competitors:
- 4.5-mile short course
- Approximately 9-mile long course
- 1,000-meter junior race
The protected waters of Mission Bay provided an ideal setting for both competitive racing and safe participation across age groups and disciplines.
Community at the Core
Beyond the race itself, the Hanohano Ocean Challenge continues to stand out for its strong sense of community. Support from brands and teams also plays a role, with Seychelle specifically thanking the SIC Maui team for providing her race equipment.
After more than three decades, the Hanohano Ocean Challenge remains a cornerstone of the California paddling calendar — not just because of its history, but because of its ability to evolve while staying true to its inclusive, community-first roots.
