Mega kick-off at the California Summer Opening Sylt

Perfect start for the California Summer Opening on Sylt

Sylt, May 29, 2025 – The California Summer Opening on Sylt could not have got off to a better start: Bright sunshine, a fresh sideshore wind from the south and thousands of spectators made for a spectacular opening. On the first day of the event, the California Wingfoil Masters competed in the slalom discipline on the North Sea in front of Brandenburg Beach. A total of four complete slalom eliminations were held – a successful start to the sporting highlight of the Whitsun weekend.

Joost Brendel (Duotone) leads the field, winning two of the four races and finishing second once. As the worst result can be dropped after three races, Brendel’s ninth place in race three is of no consequence. With 2.0 points, he only just missed out on the ideal score.

Close duel for second place
There was an exciting duel for second place behind the leader: Lucas Matthes (Core) and Julius Manthei (Duotone) each won a race. At the end of the day, Matthes had 4.0 points, just ahead of Manthei, who had 5.0 points to his name. Johann Dietze (Duotone) follows in fourth place, Alina Kornelli (Core) completes the top 5 – and also leads the women’s field. Behind them are Jelena Duwe (Slingshot/Ride Engine) and Nele Fischenbeck (F-One).

Young talents show off their skills
In the Youth U17 classification, Paul Donner (Gong/Duotone) is in the lead ahead of Mattes Brendel (Duotone) and Aaron Olbrisch (Neilpryde). In the Junior U15 category, Tebbe Voget (Duotone), who is just ten years old, impresses with a lead ahead of Quirin Olbrisch (Neilpryde).

Great atmosphere on the promenade
Parallel to the top sporting performances, there was a lively atmosphere on the promenade. In summery temperatures, thousands of visitors followed the thrilling races live and enjoyed the varied supporting program on the Brandenburg beach.

“We are delighted with this great opening day. Thousands of spectators, a unique atmosphere on the promenade and spectacular wingfoil sport on the North Sea – it was the perfect mix for a successful start,” sums up Matthias Regber, Managing Director of the organizing company Choppy Water GmbH.
