Downwind Foiling for Beginners

Downwind SUP Foiling is with out a doubt THE new cool thing in the SUP related water sports world. You of course already know that because you are a reader of the Stand Up Magazin. The interest in SUP Foiling and foiling in general has doubled year of year since the pandemic.

One of the reasons I enjoy writing about these sports, is because I enjoy participating in them as well. As far as SUP Downwind Foiling goes, I have not been able to make it into the club of people who master this rather incredibly hard to learn skill. Catching a wave on a SUP Foil is considerably easy in compare to continuously connecting open ocean swells. I became one more time, painfully aware of this when I took my downwind foil board on a Maliko Run this past weekend. Instead of using a paddle I used a small wing that would allow me to get up on foil easier, from where I then would practice to connect the bumps using the wing as a crutch, when I need to get back up on foil.

In this video you can come along the Maliko Run witness how incredibly hard it is to learn that skill.
