It is quite coincidental that we just had a conversation with one of our affiliates about the future of SUP Surfing. In fact this entire conversation was in the wake of our video debating the problem with SUP Surfing in general.
One of the topics was that SUP Longboard Surfing could be a solution to make competitive SUP Surfing more accessible, since the short board class is held on boards with athletes standing to their knees in the water.
Now the APP has, for the first time, (like they heard our conversation) included Longboard SUP Surfing and now we have our first Longboard SUP Surfing Worldchampion and news from the APP:
LECO SALAZAR BECOMES THE FIRST EVER SUP LONGBOARD WORLD CHAMPION AND 8 APP DEBUTANTS SECURE THEIR SPOT IN THE MAIN EVENT
The SUP Longboard World Champion was crowned today at the Gran Canaria Pro Am. After a day of huge upsets, clutch performances and flawless longboarding at La Cicer, SUP veteran Leco Salazar secured the first-ever SUP longboard World Title, while French- favourite Benoit Carpentier took home second. Salazar’s title comes 10 years after he was crowned APP World Champion, marking a decade as one of the APP’s greatest contenders as well as proving he can still challenge and conquer the best in the world.
Today also saw eight fresh-faces qualify for the professional division of the Gran Canaria Pro Am after a competitive run of trials for the men and women. Headed up by trials’ winners, Kapono Fukuda and Marine Kerdreux, the eight hopefuls passed their initiation into the main event and now have the chance to prove themselves against the best in the world.
