European SUP League 2026: Structured Calendar and Expanded Circuit Across Europe
The European SUP League (ESL) has confirmed its 2026 competition calendar, outlining a multi-stop circuit designed to improve accessibility for athletes and provide a more regionally balanced schedule. Following its inaugural season, the league continues under the framework of the European Surfing Federation, working in coordination with national federations.
Circuit Structure and Objectives
The 2026 season introduces a block-based calendar, grouping events into regional “mini circuits.” This approach is intended to reduce travel demands, simplify logistics for teams, and support broader international participation.
The league’s stated objectives include:
- Facilitating athlete mobility between events
- Increasing consistency in competition opportunities
- Supporting the development of SUP through national federation cooperation
- Providing a structured European race pathway
Confirmed ESL Trials 2026
Seven qualifying events (“Trials”) are currently scheduled across Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe:
- Spain – Santa Pola: 24–26 April
- Italy – Taranto: 1–3 May
- France – Pornichet: 12–14 June
- Switzerland – Zurich: 19–21 June
- Poland – Racibórz: 26–28 June
- Spain – Huelva: 5–6 September
- Portugal – Sesimbra: 11–13 September
The geographic distribution creates three main competition phases in spring, early summer, and late summer.
Regional Balance and Planning Advantages
By clustering events by region and date, the ESL aims to make it feasible for athletes to attend multiple races within a single travel period. This format is particularly relevant for club teams and national squads managing limited budgets and seasonal planning.
The inclusion of inland venues such as Racibórz and Zurich, alongside coastal locations like Santa Pola, Pornichet, and Sesimbra, also reflects a mixed competition environment across flatwater and ocean settings.
Position Within the European SUP Calendar
The ESL calendar adds another structured series to the European race landscape, operating alongside existing tours and standalone events. Its federation-backed model focuses on standardized competition formats and coordination with national bodies.
Further operational details, including competition formats, ranking criteria, and participation guidelines, are expected to be released in updates throughout the season.
Outlook for 2026
With seven confirmed trials across six countries, the ESL enters its second year with a clearer geographic framework and a defined seasonal flow. The effectiveness of the regional block system and the level of international participation will be key indicators of the league’s role within the broader European SUP competition structure.
