Edo Tanas From Athlete to Coach: How Foiling Fish Is Shaping the Future of Downwind Foiling
Downwind foiling has evolved rapidly over the past few years, and with it, a new generation of riders and coaches has emerged. One of them is the founder of Foiling Fish, a coaching platform dedicated to helping committed athletes progress faster and more efficiently in downwind foiling and foil sports.
A Lifetime in Watersports and Foiling
The story behind Foiling Fish begins early. Edo started coaching at just 15 years old, back in high school, where the focus was already on wing foiling and wake foiling. Growing up immersed in watersports and competing from a young age created a deep understanding of movement, balance, and performance on the water.
When foiling first began to take shape as a discipline, the transition felt natural. Years of competition and hands-on experience working with both high-level athletes and complete beginners laid the foundation for a coaching style that adapts to each rider’s goals and learning curve.
Growing With the Sport of Downwind Foiling
As downwind foiling developed into its own performance discipline, so did the coaching philosophy behind Foiling Fish. Through constant experimentation with technique, equipment, and training methods, progression became both faster and more precise. Competing at the highest level of the sport and eventually winning championships highlighted one key lesson: the impact of quality coaching cannot be overstated.
Often, small technical adjustments led to massive breakthroughs. Helping riders unlock those moments and accelerate their learning process became second nature and ultimately the driving force behind turning passion into purpose.
We interviewed Edo at the 2025 Koa Kai Triple Crown on Molokai before the start to the Molokai2Oahu race.
In this video we spoke about his background and why he is so darn fast on a foil.
He ended up winning the M2O in a nail biter against Kane DeWilde who held the lead almost to the end.
The Birth of Foiling Fish Coaching
About three months ago, that vision officially became reality with the launch of Foiling Fish, a dedicated downwind foiling coaching business. Since then, it has grown steadily, fueled by real results and genuine stoke.
Each session reinforces the original motivation: riders leave energized, confident, and progressing faster than they thought possible. Coaching happens side by side on the water, with a strong focus on long-term development, safety, and efficiency. The primary mission is clear—help committed riders learn how to downwind foil and reach their personal goals.
In-Person Coaching and Specialized Clinics
Foiling Fish currently offers a wide range of in-person foil coaching services, including:
- Tow foiling sessions
- Open-ocean downwind support and coaching
- Side-by-side, on-board downwind coaching
- Group clinics for all levels
In addition, specialized clinics focus on flat-water paddling, pumping efficiency, and foundational foiling techniques that directly translate into real-world downwind conditions.
Downwind University: Online Foiling Coaching Worldwide
Alongside in-person coaching, Foiling Fish has been building a comprehensive online coaching platform over the past six months. Known as Downwind University, the platform combines pre-recorded lessons with interactive access to the coach, making high-level foiling knowledge accessible worldwide.
This online community allows riders everywhere to shorten their learning curve, connect with like-minded foilers, and continue progressing regardless of location or conditions.
What’s Next for Foiling Fish
Looking ahead, Foiling Fish is expanding beyond coaching. Upcoming projects include the launch of Foiling Fish merchandise, featuring paddles and branded gear, as well as foiling retreats designed to bring the right people together for unforgettable experiences—both on and off the water.
With a strong foundation in coaching, competition, and community, Foiling Fish is positioning itself as a key player in the future of downwind foiling education.
