Molokai2Oahu SUP & Wingfoil Race 2025 Breaks Records and Broadcast Barriers
The 2025 Molokai2Oahu Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) and Wingfoil Race made history twice over, setting new performance benchmarks and expanding its reach to a broader audience. For the first time ever, the grueling 36-mile course across the Kaiwi Channel was completed in under two hours—and the race was broadcast live on both Local TV and Rouge TV.
Historic Broadcast Across the Kaiwi Channel
Bringing a live broadcast across the Kaiwi Channel at speeds averaging 20 mph (30 km/h) was a technical feat. The coverage included a helicopter, a commentary boat, and a camera boat equipped with gear reportedly as valuable as the vessel itself. This bold move by the organizers marks a pivotal moment in the race’s evolution, finally giving athletes the spotlight they deserve.
While this level of coverage might have been ideal during the peak of SUP’s popularity, its arrival in 2025 signals a new era. The broadcast has expanded viewership beyond niche media outlets—though for the most in-depth behind-the-scenes coverage, fans are encouraged to check out our exclusive content on YouTube.
Record-Breaking Performances in Ideal Conditions
This year’s race benefited from near-perfect conditions: northeast winds exceeding 20 knots from early morning, paired with a long-period NE swell and a shorter wind swell. Athletes have also significantly improved, and downwind gear has evolved rapidly over the past year. Some competitors rode front foils with aspect ratios between 17 and 19, showcasing the cutting-edge innovation in foil design.
Men’s SUP Results: Four Athletes Break the 2-Hour Barrier
The men’s race saw four athletes shatter the two-hour mark:
- Edo Tanas – 1:56:55 (Winner)
- Kane De Wilde – 1:57:57
- Kai Thompson – 1:58:17
- Toaura Haumani – 1:59:38
Edo Tana’s victory came in the final mile, overtaking early leader Kane De Wilde. Kai Thompson, previously under the radar, delivered a breakout performance. All four athletes beat the previous course record of 2:02:58 set by Edo in 2024. Finn Spencer and Guido Ferrer also surpassed last year’s record, making it six record-breaking performances in total.
Women’s SUP Results: Massive Improvements Across the Board
The women’s division saw equally impressive gains:
- Annie Reickert – 2:19:51 (Over 7 minutes faster than her 2024 time of 2:27:12)
- Gabriella Bella – 2:21:19 (A stunning improvement from 2:52:27 in 2024)
- Olivia Piana – 2:34:51 (Improved from 2:57:01 in 2023)
Gabi’s performance earned her the title of “Most Improved Female,” highlighting the rapid progression in both athletic skill and equipment.
