This weekend, Hawaii was the epicenter of the foil world as over 150 SUP foilers participated in the annual Molokai Holokai Maui2Molokai Challenge. This race has a long-standing tradition in Hawaii, linking the islands of Maui and Molokai. But it’s more than just a race—it’s a true Molokai community event. The second day is always filled with cultural activities, a 5K run, and the iconic 8-mile downwind run known as the Kamalo Run. This stretch of water gained fame during the SUP boom and is known for producing some of the best downwind bumps when conditions align.
Following the massive success and surge in demand for foil racing in 2024, this year was no different. The men’s category alone featured 147 athletes from around the world, including Tahiti, Holland, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal—and even one competitor from the landlocked U.S. state of Montana.
Full Recap of an epic crossing
With so many participants, the event also served as a great temperature check for the competitive foil scene—highlighting the top contenders, rising stars, and dark horses. Among the established names were Kane de Wilde, Edo Tana, Finn and Jeffrey Spencer, as well as OG legends like James Casey and Kai Lenny.
One of the standout up-and-comers is Kai Thompson from Australia. After his first visit to Hawaii in 2023, he has rapidly progressed and made several podium appearances this year. In fact, he secured the silver medal at the M2M, finishing just behind Kane de Wilde. Kane clocked in at 1:26:47, a minute and 28 seconds ahead of Kai. Guido Ferrer, a lesser-known name in the scene, took third place with a time of 1:29:58.
The timeline below shows the athletes as they crossed the finish line, offering insight into how the top competitors were spaced out—and just how dense and competitive the field really was.

In fact as we look at the results, we see some well known names rather further down than expected. For example James Casey the M2O winner or 2023, or Kai Lenny who won all the channels on foil in the pre-pandemic world, but as Kai said in one of our interviews, right now the top 10 foilers are so close in time and it is really anybody’s game.
In terms of female participation, we have quite a ways to go. As of right now there are really only 3 ladies that are to top of the crop and that for many years. In relation to the men, the female participation is only 5.44% wich is really nothing.

On the Wing Foil part the stand outs here are definitely Bobo Gallagher and Cash Berzolla. Bobo known for his speed and Cash as the current GWA Wing Foil Wave World Champion. Another name worth mention is Livio Menelau, Livio is one of the SUP OGs winning many SUP Downwind Races in the past and continuing to be a very fast Wing Foiler. On the women side we have local girl Lily Buden, Tati Grant and Anna Kalabukhova. Same like in SUP Foiling women are currently under represented in the Hawaiian Channel crossings.
