It’s always exciting to catch up with Kai Lenny—not just because he’s such a phenomenal athlete, but also because of his rich legacy across all water sports. He was a pioneer in Stand Up Paddling and earned multiple World Titles from the APP, which was known as the Waterman League at the time.
In more recent history, Kai can rightfully be called the instigator of modern foiling. He was the one who first mounted a foil underneath a 14′ SUP race board, unlocking the endless possibilities that foil sports now offer. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been nine years since we showcased what could be called the very first “2-for-1” foil wave ride—when Kai caught a wave on his foil board, pumped back out, and rode a second wave without ever touching the water.
In this interview, we look back with Kai and put his journey into perspective as we witness yet another record-breaking year in the Kaiwi Channel at the Moloka‘i 2 O‘ahu SUP and Wingfoil Championships.
