Casper Steinfath is touring the world following the major races in the Stand Up World Series and Stand Up World Tour, as well as the big races in Europe. Follow the #Vikingontour here on the Stand Up Magazine as he recaps his experience from each tour stop.

This weekend marked the start of the 2014 Stand Up World Racing Series. The Series which are organized by the Watermanleague has seen significant growth world wide since it’s birth back in 2012. This year marks the 3rd season of the World Racing series and it is set to be the biggest and most competitive season yet! A great portion of the world’s fastest racers appeared here in Brazil for the Alagoas Pro which marked the 1st stop of this year’s tour. 2 time World Series Champion Kai Lenny was back to defend his titles but he certainly had his work cut out for him with racers like Connor Baxter, Jake Jensen, Eric Terrien and Zane Schweitzer and many many others nipping at his heels. I think everyone was feeling a bit anxious and nervous going into this event. It was the season opener and everyone wanted to get a solid start to the 2014 racing season. Saturday was the day of the sprint racing. The beach here in Alagoas was packed with hundreds of excited Brazilian spectators as we were all thrown into the competition pit. The sprint races featured a 3-400 meter buoy course, which challenged all our technical board handling and wave riding skills. We were divided into 8 man heats and every round 4 people would advance. Everyone was on fire and hungry to win.

In the women’s race an in form Angela Jackson proved to be the one to beat. Few ladies even came close to Angie during the sprint heats, which she dominated from start to finish. Barbara Brazil was the local dark horse that came closest to giving Angela a run for her money. I personally had a great series of heats on my Naish 12’6” Javelin LE and was stoked to make it all the way to the final to battle it out for glory and ranking points on the World Series. Conditions for the final included lots of wind on the course, sneaky waves and an awesome crowd on the beach! I had a mixed start with a few complications but fought my way back up. After the first buoy Connor was in the lead with Kai, Jake and I right behind. Then a small wave came through which Connor and Kai both caught and rode off on. I battled it out with Zane and Jake but eventually fell behind at the last buoy and missed the last wave in. Up ahead I saw Connor outsprint Kai up the beach with Jake Jensen and Zane following right behind. I was stoked with my 5th place but content on putting my work in on the long distance race the following day.

On Sunday the long distance race was on and took us on a 5,5 km course around the beautiful beach of Praia do Frances. In my eyes the distance was a bit short to be classified as a long distance, but it certainly challenged us in a great variety of conditions in a very short time! Upwind, downwind, with the waves, against the waves, flat water and beach run. You had to be able to adapt to all conditions to win today! As the horn sounded the race start over 100 elite paddlers hit the water and hammered away. I had a phenomenal start and felt really strong. I made it to the outside buoy in first place, but shortly thereafter saw Connor, Jake and (surprisingly) Kody Kerbox take off downwind at high speed. The leading group quickly got a commanding lead on the rest of the pack. Connor Baxter is known to be the downwind master and today’s conditions had Connor’s name written all over. I battled it out in the pack for the rest of the race and saw my chance to break away on the last downwind stretch. Unfortunately it was not only I that had this idea and it became an intense battle. In the end I had to settle for 8th place and a 7th overall. Guess I gotta go practice some downwinders next 🙂

In the women’s race Angela Jackson from Australia again dominated the show and secured another 1st place. She now leads the World Series after stop #1 and will look to defend this at stop #2 in Abu Dhabi next week. To me there was no doubt who was the inform paddler this event; Connor Baxter. Despite having surgery to his lower back earlier this year he does not seem to carry any visible pain and certainly was the man to beat this weekend! Watch out for the next event in Abu Dhabi next week as the 2014 SUP World Series carries on!
