SUP-World-Cup-fehmarn-cancelledMore bad news struck the SUP World today: SUP World Cup Fehmarn cancelled. This is after the Battle of the Paddle the second major event this year that had to be cancelled due to monetary reasons. While the main sponsor and organizer of the Battle of the Paddle failed to monetize the event, the situation with the SUP World Cup is slightly different. The organizers of the SUP World Cup were not able to find a title sponsor to bring in the money to ensure a high quality event. Either way the problem lays in the  lack of money. On one end, the Organizers of the Battle of the Paddle failed in their attention to give Media enough attention in order to broaden the audience beyond the SUP World.

The SUP World Cup is/was one of the best organized events in the SUP World and always had/has a great reputation amongst the athletes. Nevertheless, the organizers were not able to find a title sponsor who would bring the money to fund an event that swallows a budget in the six figures to put on.

The SUP World Cup is/was also part of the Stand Up World Series and European Cup by the waterman league. It is hard to foresee the damage to the Image of the waterman league this cancellation has done (even its not their fault) as they already had to postpone their event in Brazil this year and had problems with other events in years prior.

A black year for our sport?

After the cancellation of two major events this year, it seems to be time to ask if we are living an illusion with our sport?  How can it be that an event like the Battle of the Paddle and the SUP World Cup are not able to bring in the money to secure the event? Is the audience outside of the Core-SUP not big enough to bring in the media exposure that attracts sponsors? We saw this problem clearly at the Battle of the Paddle, they lacked the attention to media exposure.

If you want to attract big sponsors it is imperative to give them a big plattform with media who brings the event directly into the potential viewers living room or mobile device. Both events did not have that, but the question might go deeper: Do even have an audience beyond SUP who even cares? Is our market big enough? After all of what happened this year already it is very questionable. Just as a side note, as it appears we also will not see the SUP Showdown going on this year. This was the event in Waikiki who showed everybody how an event is being tailored to fit the standards of mainstream media and making it a success. Not this year, sources tell me they want to regroup this year looking at 2016.

With all off that, we might all just hope for a big explosion in 2016, to get our most loved SUP Events back with media exposure we could only dream of.
